| Save DAWGS Hello everyone!! I read this article and hit struck my very core. Please read and make a donation. We are Yorkie lovers, but we are dog lovers in general. I used to live very near Dalhart, TX. The Panhandle of TX grows some of the greatest people (as you will see in this story). Let's show them what love can do!! Against Unbelievable Odds Kids Save Hundreds of Dogs “Why do the Dogs Have to Die?” It was 2003. Diane Trull, a fourth grade teacher at Allyn Finch Intermediate School in Dalhart, Texas, used the local newspaper as a teaching tool. As she was reading to her class a regular feature of dogs at the local pound, one student asked, “What happens to the dogs if they aren’t adopted?” Diane was honest. If they weren’t adopted, they were killed. “Why do the dogs have to die?” asked a student. And another asked, “Can’t we do something about it?” Through the innocence of children, the Dalhart Animal Wellness Group and Sanctuary (D.A.W.G.S.) was born. Diane Trull and her husband, Mark, went to the city and were granted permission to open a dog rescue no-kill shelter on land once used ironically as a slaughterhouse. The shelter quickly became a haven for dogs and students alike. In this small town of just 7500 residents, Diane was startled to learn that over 600 dogs a year were being put down, 4 times the national average for dogs and cats combined. In this small classic Texas cow town, saving dogs seems a waste of time to some people. · A deeply religious neighbor told Mark Trull that it was evil to save dogs that people had cast aside, and told him he was going to Hell because he dared to teach children that the lives of dogs are valuable. · Someone broke into the sanctuary and killed several puppies · People have delivered dogs to the shelter saying, “take this dog or I will shoot it” · People leave puppies tied up with barbed wire at the gate of the sanctuary · Once they found two very pregnant dogs tied to the gate during a terrible snow blizzard · The children say they encounter adults who are scornful of their efforts “I think that probably is the hardest thing for me,” Diane says. “It isn’t the hard work, it isn’t dealing with these kids and all these dogs, it’s dealing with that piece of humanity that is so horrible, and trying to explain to kids why people are like that, and that it isn’t OK that they are like that, and please don’t be like that [yourselves].” And, as if this wasn’t bad enough, the weather can be brutal. In the spring there are torrential rains, hailstorms, powerful windstorms. In summer there is super hot and humid days of above 100-degree heat, in fall, more wind and rain all the way up to winter’s snows and frigid temperatures with wind chills to -20 degrees. The amazing thing is, though, the kids keep coming. Day after day, no matter what the weather, these kids take care of and love these dogs. Diane and Mark struggle to get food and bedding as the number of dogs continues to rise, but they have lots of little hands helping to distribute it to the needy dogs. Under the leadership of Diane Trull and her husband Mark, these kids are learning compassion, love and caring for living creatures who are dependant upon them for their lives. They could be sitting at home in front of the TV, playing video games or doing something fun. Instead, some of these kids work at the shelter 12 hours a day - feeding, watering, cleaning and playing with and caring for the dogs, muddy from head to toe during the rainy season, wrapped head to toe in winter gear during the cold, learning lessons that will take them far in life. Now the city wants their land back. They have told the Trulls that they will have until April 1, 2006, to make other arrangements for the shelter. Seems there is a cemetery next door to the shelter and the now over 500 barking dogs interferes with funeral services. They are three months from eviction, and still no place to go. A Houston family donated a trailer and DAWGS has been hauling 25 dogs at a time to Amarillo for Saturday adoption clinics. They are in search of 20 to 50 acres of land near Dalhart so the kids can continue to be involved. They will need to build the necessary buildings to house the dogs and their offices. In their two years of operation, the DAWGS facility has given almost 3,000 lost pets a second chance and has earned national recognition in the animal rights community. It has taught an untold number of kids an untold number of lessons in teamwork and responsibility. You can read more about this remarkable story at their website, donated by a California volunteer: DAWGSnTexas.com There you can read their full mission statement, of which this is a part, “We believe that it is our responsibility to leave the footprints for the ones that will come behind us, to make a difference and to make our contributions meaningful and long-lasting.” It’s time for DAWGS second chance. Help us save this most remarkable shelter, for the kids as well as the dogs. We have set up an advertising / donation site to raise much needed money in a hurry. Visit our site at: DogSafety.Net and donate today! Eviction date is April 1, 2006
