| Looking for a GOOD breeder! I have been wanting a new puppy since my Border Collie passed away 5 years ago. Husband has time and time again said no. Well over a year ago my two daughters (16 & 7) started doing a blitz campaign on him. He finally agreed last weekend that he's okay with getting a new dog. (the Border Collie was the love of his life) He really wants to wants to get a Yorkie! I've researched and researched and have always loved the breed. My brother has a great yorkie that we pet sit when he travels and my husband loves her. So I'm Yorkie shopping. And shopping. And shopping. And reading and reading and reading. It's scary! I'm so afraid I'm not going to find a good breeder!! I've read a ton of old posts here and I wasn't going to post myself but I figured what the heck?! We're looking for a female. Not for any other reason but that he loved our female Border Collie. I would love for it to be a surprise Christmas present but it can come early or later. I would really just like to get it from someone that's not doing anything shady. I need help!!! I live in Northern California. Traveling to Redding or the Bay area is not a problem. Reno isn't out of the question either. I don't want a designer puppy - I want a puppy that's healthy and from someone that breeds responsibly. If any one has any suggestions I'm all ears!! Thanks so much!! |

| One way to find good breeders is to go to the YTCA site and find the list of breeders in your state. Hope you enjoy the journey of finding your new little one.

| YTCA is a great place to start. Make sure you call them and not just email. Also Christmas is not the best time to get a puppy. too much going on, family visiting, xmas decorations all over puppy could get into or eat, etc. After xmas would be best. Puppy really needs a LOT of attention, and xmas time is just so busy for everyone it really wouldn't be fair for the puppy.

| Thanks for the responses! I guess I'll have to start making some phone calls. I understand what you mean about Christmas and you have a great point. Generally we're pretty laid back here and just go down to my mom's for dinner. (about 1/2 mile away!) Even if it's a little before or after I just thought it'd be a good time because the girls are off for three weeks and I thought it would be a great time for them to be able to play/bond with the new puppy. They are both off until the 10th of January. So a little after Christmas may be best - maybe find a litter that's ready after New Years. That would still give them a couple of weeks to play with the puppy and for all of us to get into the new puppy routine! If you know of anyone, please let me know! |

They will grill you, but remember when buying from a reputable breeder you are buying your breeder for the rest of that puppy's life; available for you 7 x 24. The deal doesn't end when you walk out the door, you have a relationship. If you don't feel comfortable with the breeder walk away. You buy your breeder first, then the puppy.

| I also want to add, Mardelin is a highly respected breeder and exhibitor, so listen to what she has to say. I have learned a great deal from her, and it's always great advice. Oh yah, also don't give into just the cute puppy faces even though you know a breeder is not a great breeder. Remember all puppies are cute! You work hard for you money right? Make sure you are supporting the right people who are doing it for the good of the breed.

| I also recommend starting with the YTCA or the Norcal division. Here is a previous thread on this same topic. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...alifornia.html Best of luck & make sure to get one from a really good breeder that looks at genetics & does tests before choosing to breed. That way, you know you are getting a good representation of the breed.

To the OP, keep you mind open when it comes to sex of the puppies, male yorkies are very loving!
