Breeding... good or bad? Today is Penny's first birthday... unfortunately, it seemed as though she had a bit of a cough, so she had to visit the vet. Things went well, however, the question of neutering her came up. I have read many books on Yorkies although there is some fact in books, I always find it best to continue to search for other opinions/ answers/ etc. I read and heard that it is good for the dog to have her first liter. With that came a list of reasons why its good... and then of course my first thoughts were the exact opposite. Like why would that be good? and how could it be good? Point is.. Im wondering, is it actually better for a dog to have her first liter? Or isnt it? Penny is 4.6 pounds, shes not tiny, but shes also not very big. She's a great dog, love her tons! I just want whats best for her.. if it is to have puppies or not. Opinions please. Also, can it hurt them more health wise? Thank you, Le & Penny

It's best for her to never have a heat cycle let alone a litter. If she is spayed before she ever comes into heat you will eliminate her chance of ever getting mammary cancer. If you spay her before her second heat, her risk of cancer rises to 8%. After her second heat her risk rises to 25%. 80% of mammary tumors are cancerous. Pregnancy is risky in toy breed dogs. C-sections are common. The best thing you can do for her health is to get her spayed asap.

pyometra is the number one reason to get them spay if not having puppies and it is not cheap to breed this breed as many have to have c section as they are small dogs and that can cost like $1200 here is some info on pyometra and it happens fast and they can die from it Pyometra & Uterus Infections in Dogs
