Karen Wilkes, Georgia: Another "breeder" to avoid I have been interacting by email with a Karen Wilkes of Georgia. She had an ad posted this week on terrificpets.com of a really cute little female yorkie. I let her know I was interested, and we emailed back and forth with questions, answers... the price was $1599, but in another email she told me that the male yorkies were 1599, the female was 1699. I was O.K. with that. I asked for pictures of mom and dad, and more pictures of the puppy. She told me she was busy the next day, but would have pictures by the evening. She also suddenly added that the female that I liked was the smallest, so would be more expensive than the $1699 she quoted -- she didn't tell me how expensive. The next day I went on terrificpets.com, and surprise, surprise another breeder was advertising my puppy using the same picture, and karen was advertising it again, but this time under a different address???? I contacted Karen as to who really had the puppy, but never heard back from her. I called her and she insisted she had the puppy, but also told me the puppy I wanted was the smallest of the females and was $2,800!!! I contacted the other breeder -- apparently that breeder had the puppy and was asking only $1200. She explained to me that Karen buys puppies from her and sells them for higher prices. When I asked karen about this, she said to me arrogantly "well I have to make some money on reselling puppies, it's like I'm a pet store". I don't quite understand how someone can justify making another $1600 on someone else's work and also make other people pay more then they have to. I am told, by the way, that Karen Wilkes is a priests wife!!! I'll bite my tongue and not comment on that one! At the end of the day, by the time I sent e-mails, made phone calls, etc. my cute little $2,800 puppy had been sold for $1200 to some lucky lady!!!

too expensive. i just can't get over it when I see how expensive some puppies are. Well, a lot of them. i was scrolling on a site last night and the puppies ranged from five hundred all the way up to over five thousand. I was looking to get an idea of what to sell my puppy for (if I sell her and don't think i will at this point). i told my husband what i was going to ask for her and he keeps picking at me saying I am too high but after last night I don't think so. Thanks for posting about these breeders.

You can find reputable breeders at local dog shows. You can find those on infodog.com or the AKC website at www.akc.org You can check the breeder referral list for the YTCA at www.ytca.org At least buy from someone you can meet, see the dam and likely the sire if the breeder owns him, and see the puppy you are buying. | |

Lorraine: I actually agree with you -- I was scammed once already by buying a yorkie over the internet, but I live in Sask. (I noticed you are in B.C.) and there are not many yorkie breeders out here, so I keep turning to the internet thinking there has to be some honest breeders that use that means for advertising. Anyways, do you know how I could find details about Canadian dog shows. Thanks.

Are you a member of the Canadian Kennel Club? If you are, you get the monthly magazine which in the back of the Official Section tells you when and where shows are all across Canada including Saskatchewan. It tells you the show giving Club and the Show secretaries so you can get the information. | |

PS Pauldo, I realized after my first post that you are a breeder likely looking for a dog for breeding? Initially, I thought you were looking for a pet.

That person is a broker you were speaking to. And yes, they do charge more for getting that pup for you. I personally would not buy from the other person either since she is willing to let someone else sell her pups for her. I want to know who my pups go to and would never let someone sell my pups! I do not mind people recommending me, but they make no extra money and I wnat to meet the prospected owner if at all possible. Sounds like you were lucky this match did not work for your sake. Some internet advertisments are not scammers and some all. It is like with anything now a days - do your homework and check references! T.

Lorraine: No I'm not a member, but I will check into becoming one. Actually so far (and it may continue that way) my 2 yorkies (Kira and Tiko) have been pets. I was thinking of trying breeding -- (the lady I bought my female from was trying to encourage me to do so -- she was moving to another town and thought Kira would make an excellent breeder) but so far I've had everything go wrong. Nonetheless, I really enjoy my 2 yorkies and do want to add another one to our household -- but I think I've got to stop there -- I don't think my husband is going to allow me to have more than 3!!!!

Oh, well, part of the problem you will run into is that a reputable show breeder with quality dogs worthy of being bred likely won't be too interested in selling a Yorkie to someone only interested in breeding and selling puppies. It will be expected that your first interest would be to show it, have a championship on it, then think about breeding it and matching it to an outstanding sire to hopefully produce some nice puppies if it is a female you managed to get. Not too many quality show breeders are too game to part with a female in the first place and often will offer a male for you to co-own and finish a championship and go from there.

Hmmm.... interesting -- no I don't have time to be showing dogs -- but would be neat to start attending some shows.
