| Oklahoma Breeder, Glenda Beavers owner at Tsa-La-Gi We bought our last yorkie from Glenda Beavers in June 2012 in Talequah, OK. We picked out a little female after being discouraged by Glenda not to buy the one we saw online & we had discussed on the phone. She wanted to keep it for a friend who would "show" her. Our puppy, Kiva, had an underbite which Glenda said would often correct itself. Glenda asked for more money because Kiva would have a beautiful coat. I'm not sure why I agreed to pay more, but I did. After about 6 weeks, both of Kiva's knees began popping. Our vet said surgery would most likely be indicated at some point. As Kiva's adult teeth came in, some of her baby teeth didn't fall out. Then she developed gingival hyperplasia (excess gum tissue) in one area that grew to cover several teeth. It had to be removed; it is now growing back. Kiva is a sweet, loving and beautiful dog. We love her very much. I was hoping to have a yorkie without health issues. I would use caution if buying one from Glenda Beavers or any breeder without a health contract/guarantee. Her website displays winning show dogs, but they can have health issues too. My first one, Sophie, had a megaesophagus and a diseased liver and had to be put to rest at 5 years old. Our 2nd yorkie, Chloe, had a malformed trachea and knees. She died at almost 7 yrs old of complications after a knee surgery because of her trachea. All of our yorkies were purchased from different breeders. We have loved and cared for all of them. I am grateful to have the resources to pay for their expensive veterinarian medical care. It seems there are no ways to be sure you have a healthy yorkie, but they have all been wonderful dogs. |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk. I appreciate your honest review. I do not know Glenda personally but I do know she has some beautiful yorkies. I am sorry your girl is having some problems but to be honest the problems you stated are very common among yorkies. Some yorkies are prone to having bad teeth. Puppies often have to have their puppy teeth pulled. As for the knees, most breeders I know do not guarantee against bad knees unless the knees are severely bad at a young age. As long as Kiva is not showing any pain or discomfort from her knees she could possible live a long normal life without needing surgery. You are so correct in saying that there is no sure way of knowing a puppy will be healthy, regardless of what you pay for it or regardless of how reputable the breeder is. I hope that Kiva gives you many years of joy and love. I hope you can share some pictures of her.

| Kiva's knees and teeth both had issues during her first year? Surely this would be covered by even a basic health guarantee? Did this breeder offer no guarantee whatsoever?

| My little Dolly is from Glenda & she's still strong & healthy at 10 years old. Still only 3.5 lbs., her looks & energy still cause her to be mistaken for a puppy. Sorry you're not happy with her.

| I do not know anything about this breeder; however, I do know how difficult it was to find a breeder that met my standards in the Oklahoma/Arkansas area. I did go to her site and I don't see a mention of a health guarantee? When you purchased your puppy did she mention one? The only other thing I found was some questioning on her shipping pups for a friend to pet stores. Do not know what came of all that. Have you contacted her regarding your issues?

| I have a girl form Glenda. She's healthy with great teeth and knees. The price was very reasonable. I have no complaints about this breeder.

Your point about "if health is important to you in your dog" to first check to see if the breeder offers a meaningfull health warranty is good advice. How-ever given your history with previous dogs from different breeders did have serious health issues, it does beg the question why you went with this one that did not offer a warranty? Also breeders will not likely warranty against LP which is very prevalent in this breed. They might offer advice and emotional support,, most especially if the dog is older when ddx'd with LP. There are many grades of LP and you did not mention what Grade Kiva has, and at what age it was diagnosed? LP is likely a polygenetic condition most especially if it is present in both knees. There is no genetic test (as of yet), there is for the breeder only breeding dogs free of LP and hoping that the litter is free as well. With no guarantee that this will be so, even doing your best to know the health lineage of your breeding lines. There are very few actual studies on LP in Yorkies, and certainly no genetic studies to identify the suspected multi-gene involvement. There are a few studies that do indicate some of these suspected genetic osteo conditions can be affected by the environment the pup is raised in. I do hope you let your breeder know, and wish you the best for Kiva.

| Breeder Problems I know this is a bit late. But I have also had numerous problems with a dog that was purchased from Glenda. Don't get me wrong, he is a super sweet boy who I love dearly, but his list of health problems is described by my vet as "very exceptional". Unfortunately, when breeders are breeding "show dogs" they "line breed" which is basically an acceptable way of saying inbreeding. They are trying to breed in the show qualities, but in turn breed in the bad issues as well. It's not just me. I know of someone else who has one of her dogs, that also has unusual but genetic issues. When I personally called Glenda about my dog, she seemed irritated that I would have an issue with one of her dogs, and said I could ship him back to her and she'd send me another dog. So give up the dog I love and have paid extensive vet bills for and get another potential problem? I declined. I love him and will do all I can to keep him comfortable until his very last day. Next time, it will probably be a shelter dog. They don't usually have the issues a purebreed does. |

[\QUOTE] What kind of breeder encourages a customer to buy a puppy and the customer is about to buy that puppy, yet at the last minute, goes NOPE! She's going to my friend! Get another puppy! ..... That just seems unfair to me! Sorry to hear about the bad experience you and Kiva had.
