| I don't know who's in Portland but you have one of the best in the country in Sunny Valley, Deb Sillers of Amazing Yorkies. She's a member on here.

| Heck yes....If I lived as close to her as you do and was looking for a puppy to buy, she'd be first on my list of breeders to call!! Not only does she have beautifully bred puppies, but she also has a great health contract. A good piece of advice/info I've heard over and over here is this...you buy the breeder, not the puppy...and it's so true. If you buy a quality puppy from a good breeder, most likely, you are going to end up with a healthy, well balanced dog. If buy from someone who has no idea or doesn't care what they are doing, you are playing Russian roulette. Make sure you look for someone who.... 1.) keeps their puppies until they are 12 weeks of age. ~If they sell them earlier, the puppies can have developmental issues because it hasn't been with it's mother long enough to learn all that it needs to know. On top of that, you should question WHY they are getting rid of the puppy early...is it to save money or is it to get rid of it because there's something wrong with it health wise, or they want to get rid of it before whatever's wrong with it is noticeable. Whatever the case, good breeders hold their pups until 12 weeks of age. 2. Offers a Spay/Neuter Contract ~Any breeder who's got GOOD lines will want to protect their lines. If they don't have a spay/neuter contract, it may be because they don't have anything worthwhile to protect. It may be because they care more about money than they do their dogs...in that case, it will show through the quality of dogs they produce. 3. Offers a health contract ~If they are breeding healthy dogs, they should have no problem backing up their lines with a health contract. If they are above board and ethical, they should have no problem replacing a pup if something goes wrong genetically or something that isn't the fault of the owner. A lot of bad breeders aren't going to offer this because they'd be replacing puppies left and right. Good breeders who are confident in their lines will offer it because they do have healthy lines and while a fluke may happen here or there, most of their puppies are healthy and won't need to be replaced. 4. Make SURE you can see the facility you are buying the puppy from. Make sure you can see the parent!! ~If you can't see where you are buying your puppy, this is a big RED FLAG. You could be purchasing your puppy from a broker or a puppy mill or a BYB. If they aren't willing to show you their location, there's a chance it's because they've got something to hide. You don't want to buy your puppy from deplorable conditions. Furthermore, you don't want to support those kinds of businesses where dogs are forced to live in horrible conditions. I personally would look for reviews online as well. If the breeder is shady, there's a chance someone will have reported having problems. Pick a breeder who is breeding specifically to better the quality of the breed...because if they are breeding for those reasons, they are trying to breed the best dogs they can. They are striving to produce a puppy with good health, good genes, good disposition, good confirmation etc etc....so chances are, you will get a puppy with these traits. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't buy a dog from a pet store....because those dogs just come from puppy mills!! Hope this helps!! |

| Thanks for the responses! We'll definitely be contacting Deb. Looks like she does a lot of show dogs so she might be a little out of our price range. We're not looking to breed our Yorkie or compete with it. Hoping to find a healthy male Yorkie puppy from an honest and ethical breeder for somewhere between $600 and $1000. |

If you are looking for cheap because of the price, you may not be able to afford a dog as Vet bills can be pretty expensive and if a yorkie becomes ill, you can't mess around, you must get Vet care. Read the contract and there should be one outlining what is covered. Do a little research, ask around about that breeder. There is a huge show coming up early December with two Williamette Toy Club shows, two back to back Mt. Rainier Yorkie Club specialties and two all breed shows in Vancouver Washington just across the border from Oregon. Likely info on AKC site for upcoming shows. There will be many Yorkie breeders there, some local to Portland.

You may pay more money up front for one of her dogs, but the chances of you getting a puppy that's riddled with the health problems you may find in a cheaper dog is SOOO much slimmer. I found this explanation of costs yesterday for another breeder. It may help the OP understand the costs in breeding.... Yorkshire Terrier Breed Characteristics | Yorkmont Yorkshire Terriers for Sale | Yorkshire Terrier Breed Description BTW, one thing the above breeder doesn't really touch on is health testing. It cost's a lot to health test a dog for breeding...and think about how many dogs breeders show and then test for good health to breed, only to find out it fails the test and cant be used...that's money that's no recouped in the dog...or if for any reason the dog throws genetic issues and needs to be pulled from the breeding program. Breeding QUALITY is very expensive. The way I look at is the following...you can pay for a dog from a great line and a great breeder upfront, and you can enjoy a much healthier dog....or you can pay a BYB a cheaper price...but you are most likely buying from someone who hasn't genetically tested their dogs(this is different than just a vet exam) and the chances of problems getting passed to a puppy are much greater...and then you end up paying MORE money anyways on vet bills and you end up suffering lots of heartache as you watch your pet suffer. I adopted both of my dogs. My dog that was FREE has cost me well over $2,000 in vet bills JUST this year and I've only had him a few years. I could have paid for a "well bred" puppy for that. I can't imagine how irritated I would be if I paid $500-$1000 for the dog and then had to turn around and pay for a bunch of health problems. Don't get me wrong...I love my little guy and would pay his vet bills all over in a heartbeat and I am glad I adopted him and wouldn't trade him for anything...I am just saying, for as much as I've paid for a pup with health issues, I could have bought a pup from someone like Debbie. If you do get a dog from a person who doesn't do genetic testing, I'd urge you to get health insurance for the dog right away!! If you don't want to pay top dollar for a dog, you probably don't even begin to want to know how expensive vet bills can get for dogs who are poorly bred and are sick or suffer from genetic illneses.

| Indeed Deb and her pups are amazing! I got my Cookie Monster from her, and Cook has been everything I could have ever wanted in a yorkie. Beautiful, sweet, fun, athletic, mischievous, energetic, and what a hunter she is. I mean Cook is pure terrier when it comes to personality, which is EXACTLY what I wanted. Her adult size projection for Cook that she made when the deal was closed at 12 weeks was right on the money now more than a year later, so she really must know her lines. Great health contract, and Cookie passes every exam from my vet with flying colors. She is just a joy to be around and Deb was so helpful when I had a billion questions, especially early on when Cook was getting settled into her forever home here.

| Karen Edwards, YTCA, hautelooksyorkshires.com. She's an excellent breeder and someone I know corresponded with her via email multiple times, she seems like a very nice lady. Her sires and dams are also very beautiful/handsome.

| I believe Karen is quite reputable based upon my own research as is Debbie Ray of Sum Toi. We purchased a pup from Sum Toi and our Gabby is a great dog. Debbie Ray, is ethical, cares about the breed and her lines.

| Yep, Debbie Ray is also a great breeder, but her price ranges are usually $1500 and up so it might be out of OP's price range, but she is still a good breeder. Carroll Hale from Formosa Yorkies (formosayorkies.com) is also a good breeder. I think Debbie, Carroll, and Karen are all located around Eugene, OR area and I think they're about 2 hrs from Portland.

| Yes Debbie is a great breeder. Karen recommended the friend that I know to Debbie. Debbie's price range is around $1500 and up however so I'm not sure if it's in the OP's price range or not. Carroll Hale from Formosa Yorkies (formosayorkies.com) is also praised pretty highly here on YT. Debbie, Carroll, and Karen are all from Eugene, OR I believe, which is about 2 hrs away from Portland. OP: You have some great breeders all in your area! Deb Sillers, Karen Edwards, Debbie Ray, Carroll Hale...wow!
