| Breed her? Ok, I have never really paid attention to this forum until now. I am trying to decide if I want to breed Dakota. Shes a little over 3 lbs, and is almost 5 months. So she might gain another pound, def. not over 5 lbs. I know that her first heat you don't breed her, you wait until her 2nd. So what are the cons to breeding? I know the pros..lol. I am doing some reasearch now. Please don't jump down my throat, I do know that happens often. Thanks! |

Lots can happen, thats for sure. I know first hand. I've not had one single easy delivery yet. So please, do consider lots can go wrong. I spent 3 months of round the clock 24/7 bottle feeding a cleft pallate baby. Up every 1 hour round the clock , then every 2 hours, plus working a full time day job too. So its best you have the available time for things that can arise. I would just do LOTS of reading up on the subject before you decide, since you have plenty of time to prepare. There is alot to learn, thats for sure. I'm still learning! I don't think we can ever know it all. But good luck in what you decide!!!! If you ever have questions I am here!!! Just send me a PM if you'd like! Good luck!!!! Last edited by Breny; 10-25-2007 at 11:16 AM.

See thats stuff that I want to know. Maybe it will scare me out of it.. I have heard a lot of times that if the mom is under 4 lbs that its not good to breed them?? The reason why is bc if I do want to breed her I am not going to get her fixed next month.

I had one litter of just 1 baby. The mom was unable to deliver her and she ended up at the vet, had 2 oxi shots and them preped for a c section. She then delivered on her own before they started. I just had a litter of 2 babies and one came by himself after 2 doses of oxi - then after 11 hours of labor, the girl was taken by c section. Lots of $$$ involved. (I'm not trying to scare you!!!!!!!!!!) Now, I prefer my moms to be 5lbs, but there are breeders who breed smaller ones. Brooklyn (my new boy) his mom was 3 1/2 pounds daddy was 2 1/2. Way too small in my opinion!!! But she owns the parents, the grand parents and the Great granparents and they are all the same size. So she's comfortable breeding that way.

You will pretty much will be tied to mom and these pups until after weaning. There is making sure that mom is has proper nutrition All pups are nursing properly, at times it will take your intervention to ensure each pup is obtaining adequate milk intake...moving them around on each breast. Weighing and temp taking of pup and mom is done daily....For the pups to make sure they are gaining and their ability to maintain body temperature is progressing as it should. For the mom, to make sure that she has no infection and isn't losing weight. You will have vet checks, vaccinations, dew claw and tail docking removal fees. You will have socalizing on these pups. Bathing, nail clipping, ear and pad trimming, insuring their ears will stand and piddle pad training. Once weaned the fun part begins.....this is a dangerous period and pups can go down at this time.....so, you have to make sure that they are eating properly. Once the pups are placed in homes you are then available to their new families questions 7x24....they are going to turn to you for alot of things.

| Its a huge processs. My bf doesn't want me to breed her, first bc shes too small he says and she will be scared, she gets scared really easily and he doesn't think that you should breed your own pet. So he wants me to get her spayed. Which I think I might do. I don't know if I am up for all of this. Plus I could possibly loose her during this whole process |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Yeah - What she said....LOL This is the part that I crave and what drives my desire. Alot thinks of this as work but this just gets me going. I LOVE every aspect of this process. I live for the work and beleive me it really takes all your time. Call me crazy, but I live for this. (all that she just described for you) And I am here for my pups owners after they are gone. I answer questions all the time for them. But thats part of the whole process I love. Plus I get life time friends out of the deal too! (so its not all scrary things that can happen) Quote:

I am trying to help her, but we are kind stuck. I have been taking her out around other dogs, which she does fine with, and I take her to new ppl (ppl at my work, not strangers..lol) and let her stay there with them and she just shakes. I think that I got her wayy before she was 8 week. The breeder said she was but she was soo small bearly a pound and she wasn't eating dry puppy food, she was still eating wet food would drink, I had to feed her out of a surrienge

| I would not breed her unless she was over 5 lbs and even then ask your vet, have test run. Learn all you can on breeding before you start. |
