| Getting possible pregnant female Okay, I have previously mentioned at work about wanting to someday breed yorkies, but how Cozy, (+10 lbs.), is way overstandard so I could never in good conscious breed her. Well, tonight someone at work has told me that their neighbor (a yorkie breeder) is trying to find a good home for female yorkies and they don't think they would charge me anything because I could provide a good home. The reason they are rehoming her is that they are looking to downsize to a more manageable number because her husband died recently and she doesnot feel she can give them all the love and attention they deserve. My coworker said that the some of the females maybe pregnant already. My coworker said that she has been helping this woman out with the doggy care. This is not how I was looking to getting in to breeding/puppy raising. I won't be able to met this neighbor until next week but my coworker told me that she will let them know that I am very interested. My main question is how will I know if the female is pregnant or not? Also should I feed the new addition puppy food to be on the safe side just in case she is pregnant? I don't know much about breeding/raising puppies and was plan on researching the topic throughly and completely before I went into it.I maybe putting the cart before the horse though and may not want any of the dogs she is trying to rehome.

| Well I am not a breeder or anything but before you go I would set up a visit with the vet just to be on the safe side..then before you bring one home you could take her to the vet, which would be wise even if she wasnt pregnant..you wouldnt want her to be sick and bring something home to your other dog...if the dog is far enough along the vet should be able to tell...and the breeder should know if she is pregnant or not and should have an approximate due date for you also!! Good luck!! Dawn |

| A vet check would have to be a must for me with any new addition to my furbaby family. It just that from reading the different threads here it seems that unless and x-ray is done or the babies come you really don't know. Supposedly the females are AKC registered as are this woman's studs. I don't know about there breeding practices though. My main worry is that this breeder is somehow running a puppy mill because why if you are thinks of downsizing would you rehome possibly pregant females. Rather than not breed the females any longer. If the woman does end up being a bad breeder I will probably end up with multiple dogs because I would not want them to stay in poor conditions. My co-worker has previously stated several weeks back that her neighbor keeps all the breeding females together until they are in heat and then she puts them with one of the males in a penned area until he no longer shows interest in her. She has also stated the males unless actively breeding to a female are kept in individual pens. Maybe it is for their own protection so that they do not harm each other? I don't know if this is good practice or not. It seem pretty mill like to me. The breeder lives in Easton, PA. I don't know her name.

| Please be very causious in this. If you truly want to breed start out on the right foot with an excellent quality bitch that can be your foundation. Make sure the breeder is someone you would want as your mentor and study the lines that she has. Better to start out right and not have to start over later. Sometimes a good deal turns out to be a very bad deal. Make sure that you know the standard inside and out so that you can judge these females properly or find a knowledgeable exhibitor/breeder to go with you. Good luck.

| I agree with everyone. I would insist on a Vet check before you decide if you want to take one, or not.

| I am currently thinking that this would be more of a rescue than a breeding venture. I am in no shape to be a breeder at this point. I still have so much to learn. I know myself and I don't think I could leave any dog in an environment that is not good for them. I am a sucker for a puppy dog eyes.

| Supposedly the yorkie would be given to me because I can provide a good home environment. But what I am really questioning is how does this breeder know I am a good person or not? I don't even leave Cozy with my parents for more than a few hours I could not imagine just giving her away. I would have to put money out after the fact for vet bills of coarse but that is to be expected.

| The co-worker said the males are kept in individual pens until breeding- It sounds like more of a puppymill to me unless this is a big pen that has plenty of room for play and run and socialization (not only when being fed). - I'd steer far clear from this- If you're interested in breeding, take your time and continue studying and preparing. Ffind yourself a nice, quality girl to begin with (from a nice quality breeder). |

| The Amish are notorious for Puppymills. Travel through PA and all along those beautiful country roads are nothing but Puppymills. The Amish breed then travel over the boarder to Ohio to an Amish owned flea market in which they run monthly dog auctions. I'd take a trip to this "Breeder's" place and see for myself just where and how these dogs are living. Puppymill, then yes it would be a rescue and if there are many in need please contact www.puppymillrescue or another reputable rescue for help. Best of luck. Elaine |

| My vets participates in a rescue organization and plans to go look that the woman's house themselves and is going to take as many of the dogs as they can get their hands on. They don't want me going because I lead with my heart and not my head. Hope is turns out okay.
