Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | Yorkshire Terrier standard...in a puppy??? I feel I have read anything and everything there is on Yorkies (tho I'm sure I haven't), I've been to a few dog shows, & talked to Yorkie breeders (a little). I know of the breed standard, how an adult Yorkie should look, etc. But when it comes right down to picking out your new puppy from a litter (relying more on from the looks of the puppy alone), what are the right things to look for in the hair, size, face, etc, to best assure that the puppy you choose will be as close as possible to Yorkie standard and/or show quality? I know there is no sure guarantee on how the puppy will look as an adult, but would like anyones advice on this. I'd like to choose my next puppy with a little more experiance and a little less of the "Awwww, cute puppy" factor. If possible and even better, I'd LOVE to see some puppy progression pictures of your Yorkie standard/show yorkies so I can get an even better idea on what to look for by seeing the pictures. Thanks for you help, I think others might like to know too.

| show puppy Its a little hard to pick a show puppy. They change so much. I would look at how the puppy gaits and his top-line. Check the bite, testicles and hair. If he is already breaking color done the back at 12 weeks, he probably will be too light in color. Make sure he doesnt have a soft black coat. Look at both parents closely. Stack them on the table and look at structure and topline. Stack the puppy on the table also. Ask a zillion questions and look at the pedigree. Are the parents being shown? I like to look at previous litters if posible. At a puppy age, you will only get a show prospect and not a guarantee that the puppy will be show quality as it gets older. Hope this helps. Lynn |

When I look at pups, I look at their head. Do they have a small muzzle or is the muzzle too long. Are the ears too large? Do the ears sit properly and in the right spot or do they lay more on the sides of the head? Are their eyes in the correct position or are they more wall-eyed? Plus...all the mentioned above. BUUUT, that's what I look at.

After attitude which I have to have tons of it to hold a pup for show. I like the spitfire attitude witht the no fear factor I am a head hunter so I start at the head, afterall when someone sees your dog usually its the head they see first and why not start the presentation with a gorgeous head peice, small ears and muzzle not to small and not too short. I also do not like a really big Yorkie for show with big ears are not my thing. I don't like the really terrier look, I like it softened a bit. Then I go on from there. Coat texture, confirmation nice leg in balance with the length of back. Good reach of neck. And tail sets are important you see so many with tailsets that look like they are sliding off their rears giving a round rump appearance which takes away from their profile. Once on lead I look for a great mover. One that can move out and look fluid in their movement, not jerky and sloopy movements. I have seen some that look so loose in the rear when moving and its not a pretty sight. Thats what I look for and like Deana Prestigeous Yorkies | |

| I agree with all of the above. You really can't see your full results until they are older. So I would also suggest shopping around for a puppy that is closer to the 6 month age range. However, I realize that it's hard to find one that's in that range. Another great link that I found very helpful was the new standard link: http://judgesl.com/YORKSHIRE%20TERRI...%20Terrier.htm You should be able to see these things in the puppy as well. I find that the coat is the hardest thing to judge in a puppy. I'm still working on knowing the puppy coat and how it will turn out as an adult. I think that that is something that will come with time.
