| Stud Fee Upfront OK guys I have a question for all you wonderful breeders, another friend question acually my friends mother has a yorkie and wants to know if and when she breeds him, does she get the cost of the stud fee up front? I said no , why would someone pay you before hand if there is no pregnancy, she said that way she gets paid no matter what, the other breeder told her she would get pick of liter and she does not want that, she wants stud fees, can someone kindly give me some advise to pass on to her, do you pay for stud fees no matter what happens ? thanks girls

| I'm not a breeder, but I have always heard that they pay the stud fee AND the stud's owner gets their pick of the litter. but I'm sure everyone does it differently.

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | I have a contract for my stud service and yes, I charge the stud fee upfront, after I have completed the breeding before the bitch goes home. In my contract it describes what happens if there is no pregnancy and if there is a single dead pup and single dead pup and what constitutes a litter. Its very important to have these all discussed and a contract BEFORE she studs her dog. I hope this helps! Last edited by Breny; 09-20-2007 at 05:04 PM. |

| Stud fee is up front, be sure and get a copy of the "bitch" AKC registration for your stud records, you are required to have this information. As Mary said if one or more puppies does not result from the first breeding most breeders will do a repeat breeding to the same bitch next cycle at no additional charge.

| One more thing, make sure the stud and bitch are tested for STD's and for any genetic defects. Eyes, Ears, Hips and Legs x-rayed....Bile Acids (that is if we're speaking about yorkies or any other breed that is prone to LS)

| fee The stud fee is paid after the breedings, when the bitch goes home..you are not buying puppies, you are buying the services of a stud, semen, nothing more....hopefully, it will result in a litter..if not a second service is given... Think about it...when a woman goes to a serum bank, does she only pay if she gets pregnant...same in dogs. Stud service is a big job..I maintained stud males for years..it takes money, work and time..you mean to tell me I deserve nothing for my studs services..? Same in the world of horse and all animals. You do not pay a fee and a puppy...always pay a fee..do not deal with a pup back to the stud owner..too costly! Last edited by YorkieRose; 09-20-2007 at 06:49 PM. |

| The first time we used a stud to breed to our female, we paid a stud fee. She did not get pregnant and after showing proof from the vet, we got 1/2 of the fee back. Which at the time I thought was fair. But then we took her to a more experienced breeder the next time and she wanted pick of the litter. What made me feel that the 1/2 fee return was NOT fair was when the 2cnd breeder told me that she did not get pregnant the first time because her hymen was still intact. So really we paid the fee the first time for nothing.. live and learn Sonya PS I have a question though.... Can the stud owner specify that the bitch owner MUST sell the puppies on aspay or nueter contract?? The reason we went to a experienced show breeder was because we wanted quality puppies.. of which we hoped would add a show quality male to our yorkies.... but then I wouldn't be able to show it.. doesn't make sense to me.. Also if she took pick of the litter, could I also enforce that SHE must get the puppy spayed or nuetered??

Not usually, however, it all depends on what is in the contract and what you are willing to agree too. Would I sign to that, no. It's my bitch and I'm paying for the sperm. That is why most show breeders have their own studs.

| actually the contract she wanted me to sign said that all puppies produced must be spayed/nuetered. It didn't specify if I were to keep one back.. That iis why I asked if I were to sign a contract like that could I also enforce it the other way around. I guess I felt like if she didn't feel my bitch was good enough to mate with her stud.....then why bother..

| I believe the stud fee would be up front, and if it didn't take their would be another breeding offered.
