Newbie- Pregnant mommy - temperature question Hi Everyone, My first post so hoping I'm doing it correctly. I have spent the last 2 weeks reading in YT and am already addicted. I have 2 precious yorkies, Max & Mindee. Mindee is 54 days pregnant today, scheduled for x-ray on Wednesday. Her temperature the last few days has been staying around 100.4 this morning it was at 98.6 and has only gone up to 98.8 so far today. She was eating quite well right up until yesterday then decided she didn't want anything. Finally got her to eat a bit last night but having a very hard time trying to find something she likes today again. This is her first litter, she is 3 yrs. old and weighs 4 lb. 14oz. I've read it is normal for their temp to go up and down a bit but just concerned that hers hasn't really come back up much today. Could one of you wonderful yorkietalkers let me know what you think? Thanks

It sounds to me like it's time. She'll likely go tonight or in the morning, unless you're one of the lucky ones and she delivers in the daytime. Last edited by Susan123; 09-16-2007 at 02:35 PM.

54 days is too early. if you suspect she is in labor, you need to go the ER vet unless yours is on call. puppies born before day 58 have a slim to none chance of surviving. About the temp thing. i don't know what to tell you because I never start to take my girls until day 58. it just puts too much stress on them. Good luck and i hope she doesn't have them anytime soon.

Thank you. Just talked to our vet, she will meet us at her office. Said she doesn't think it too much to be concerned about, if she isn't showing signs of labor (panting, trembling). When I booked our x-ray 2 weeks ago she told me to start taking temp day 51. I'm going to take her in now and will let you know when we return. Crossing my fingers that its good news. Thanks again

We're back!! Vet checked Mindee over and said all seems well. Said it is not unusual for temperature to drop and stay down for a period of time, especially in smaller breeds. Says their temperature is quite unpredictable at the best of times. (temp is back up to 99.8) I asked why she had wanted me to start taking her temp on the 51st day she said it just gives you a better idea of what her regular temperature is. That really confused me since she had just said their temperatures are unpredictable at the best of times. Told me to take her home and keep an eye on her and she would see us Wednesday for the x-ray. I asked if I should continue taking her temperature (may be that is stressing her out) she said yes, continue 3 times a day. This is a new vet, ours left about 6 months ago so don't really know her, but hope she is right. I know I won't be sleeping tonight. Sent my hubby out to get chicken nuggets from MacDonalds to see if she would eat that. I know its not the best food for her but am running out of ideas what to try next. She is just laying by my feet snoring right now. What do you guys/gals think???? Thanks

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Sounds like she's just miserable! At this stage, babies are moving around and gaining weight. It's just like humans...when you're around 8 months preggers, you feel yucky...same as your dog. The pups are taking up more room and it's harder to breathe or get comfortable. Keep an eye on her since this is her first litter, she's going to be nervous and not know what is going on. Do you have a pen set up for her? The last couple of days, I let mine sleep with me...but I'm a light sleeper so if they get up, I'm up. Mine actually will moan during labor since it is uncomfortable for them. Gosh, I'm just rambling...sorry.

Yes, it's a wait and see. I do have everything ready incase she does go into labour early. She doesn't want to go in her pen, just clinging to me every moment. I put a matress out on the floor so guess that's where her and I will sleep tonight. I'm a very light sleeper (and nervous tonight) so will not miss a move I'm sure. Poor little darling, those puppies look like they are break dancing in her. I took the coating off the chicken nuggets and she did eat one of them and got her to have a little vanilla icecream also. My hubby says she is probably just playing one of her "Mindee games" with me. I sure am hoping so. Thanks again everyone for your help. I'll keep you up to date as to how she is doing. Please say a prayer for my Mindee & her babies tonight.

Oh wow, I'm glad her temp went back up and everything is okay. I bet she'll love the chicken nuggets! I know my kids do. A good thing to try and they eat it almost all the time is boiled chicken and rice. Some can get them to eat Ceasers canned dog food.

Well, Mindee made it through the night. Her temperature this morning is 99.9 We slept on a mattress together at 2:30 this morning she wanted to go out for a pee and when we came back in and layed down she wouldn't quit nudging at me and going out to the kitchen, so got up with her. I had read about trying Cesar's food for her so picked some up the other day when she was being fussy (she wouldn't touch it then) so thought I would try that again. Sure enough, that's what she wanted. She ate some, had a drink of water, woddled off back to our bed and slept right through. Tried her on Cesar Filet Mignon Flavor this morning, didn't want that, but decided she would try the Chicken and Liver flavor. Loved it. Just sent my hubby out to buy up every flavor available LOL. She won't leave my side so guess we'll just watch, wait and hope she holds out for a least a few more days. Will spend the day on our big comfy couch reading here on YT. Our new favorite thing to do. Thanks all, and will let you know how Mindee is doing.

Mindee's X-Ray - Need Your Advice!!! Hi All. Mindee had her x-ray late yesterday afternoon. Showed 2 puppies. Our vet has my husband and I about crazy. They took the x-ray then he called us in with Mindee, showed us the xray with two puppies. He says they look great. I asked him what he thought about the sizes of them his answer "Well, they don't look too bad". I asked him to measure the size of the head, said he could on only one of them. Head size from ear to ear on the largest he said is around 27.9 mm . Mindee is about 29.4 mm. This is where we start to get confused. Yesterday was day 56 for her. He says to us maybe we should bring her in and induce her in the next day or so. We ask why??? He says "well, they are still growing and we don't want them to grow much more than they are now". My husband asked him if that would be safe. He says "Nothing is really safe, now lets see, she's day 56, well we could leave her and if nothing happens by day 67 then we could probably do a c-section or something" My husband says "DAY 67" He says" sure, dogs are safe to go 67 days". I asked then why 5 minutes ago did you want to induce her. He says " It was just an idea I was toying with because alot of dogs with only 2 pups won't go into labor." Then he moved on to if she was eating okay. I told him about her not eating and temp. drop a few days ago but said that all seemed fine now. She is eating her cesar food, drinking water, temp back up. He then starts to walk out of the room and I said "is that it" he says Yeah, just watch her. I asked if I could take a picture of the x-ray to have (wanted to post it here) he said no, they are their medical records that have to be kept for 5 years but after the 5 years I could have it. Then he walked out and called in the next patient. My husband & I went to the desk to pay and asked if we could get a second opinion from the other vet there and they said not today, too busy but could squeeze us in next wednesday for a few minutes. We paid and left. Sorry for going on and on, but I am just sick over this (and mad). What do you gals/guys make of this????? I'm using you as my second opinion now.

Some vets are really scarey!!!! Personally I would let her go to due date and induce her then if you are really worried about the size of the pups. I wouldn't want to risk losing them by inducing early. My vet doesn't give me the x-rays either, must be common practice. Try not to worry too much and let nature take its course.
