| Normal weight gain for puppies? Does anyone know what is normal weight gain for puppies? like from birth to week one, then week two ect? I have had my puppies yet again to the vet, for diarrhea... only one at first, which the vet said it was because he was eating so much that he had an abnormal amt of bacteria, causing the runny stools. (started this pup on albun (sp)) Then this am I noticed that they all had runny stools, so another call to the vet... I brought in stool samples of my mom and one baby... no parasites were found... but they gave me a prescription called... metronidazole. dc the albon for the one pup who was on it. They said the weight gain of the babies says that mom is feeding them very well, and not to stop them from eating (I asked because one has gained a huge amt) If they are gaining so much weight, does this mean they will be 20lb yorkies? here are the weights... birth, now 5 5/8, 15 1/8 6 3/8, 15 1/8 6, 17 1/2 (this is the one that had the runny stools first) Is this too much weight gain? **edited to add they are 11 days old now... this was the am weight today. (they are weighted each am and pm) They still have a slightly runny nose, clear... the vet said that this is ok, because they have short snouts, and if it stays clear, and their lungs sound great (that was checked on sat) and they are gaining weight, the runny nose is fine (it isn't running huge, just a little extra moist- if that makes sense... it doesn't run down their face ect) I have done everything as close to perfect that I can... and I can't figure out why they have the runny stools. I am waiting for the vet to let me know, he wasn't available when I picked up the meds, and when he called about the meds, I didn't hear the phone ring (I have it turned down so it doesn't wake up mom if she is resting) Anyways, any info will be helpful and much appreciated... I just don't know what else to do to insure that these puppies do well. thanks so much brenda ps- I change their towel when I see that it has a mess on it (from the runny stools, or when mom gets it wet from licking their bottoms to clean them) the temp in their area is 77.5 to 78.5, with no drafts, no direct sunlight. I still don't have ac, but we got a window ac, so it doesn't get so hot, but the ac isn't even close to the pups, nor the fans ect. Last edited by minniemn; 06-21-2005 at 12:58 PM. |

| your babies are gaining weight like crazy at least you know theyre being well fed. The weights of your babies at 2 weeks is my normal 4 week weight... what is the size of the dam/sire? Albon is for Coccidia, theyre young, their little immune system isnt able to fight off the infection. Keep a close eye on the stool if you see any blood in it notify the vet immediately. At this point I would change the bedding several times a day...I am not sure where you live but besides feces, heat, humidity as well as stress can all be factors. If you have the babies in a pen keep the sides wrapped all the way around draft free at all times, fans and aircondition should not be in the same room with the babies. Hope this helps congrats on your babies

These puppies are big, they were born big- funny the breeder told me her "stud" is proven to produce smaller puppies (I wanted to decrease the size in my dogs lines) The puppies mom is over 7lbs, close to 8 (although she could be at 7lbs according to the breeder... but I don't agree with starving her to fit standards, the vet said she was healthy) and the "dad" is just a tad under 5lbs. Gma was 6lbs and gpa was 3.5lbs... I don't know about the next generation sizes. If they grow up to be larger yorkies that is fine with me, I just want them healthy... I was concerned they are growing too fast, and that is why I was asking what is the normal growth rate in puppies first and second week of life, ect. But I guess no one knows (I had thought someone who has been breeding for years would have a general idea on average growth weights... like they double the first week ect... but I guess not) ... I can't find it on the net either, although I am not the best at searches. Thank you for the reply, I am in mn where it has been hot and muggy, (we put in window air to keep the house a steady temp without the humidity) I have kept the stress down as much as possible (I did have a grad party here at the house, BUT everyone stayed outside and I had the puppies in my room instead of the living room) but the first pup with runny stools was before the party, (I had them into the vet that am then) At least they are gaining and not losing... I have a good mama also, she is feeding them very well. Thanks again | |

| My puppy was very small at birth and then grew to 1 pound at 4 weeks. I was told that you really can't tell how big they will get during the young age while they are nursing, after they are off mom's milk and running around they gain much slower. My Mia is just 18ounzes at almost 9 weeks, she has not gained near as much since that one huge growth spurt. |

| I think their weight gain sounds fine. The bed temp might be low. I had read that it should not be below 87 degrees before they reach 11 to 12 days old as they cannot regulate body temp. Maybe that is why their little noses are wet. I weighed mine every day to make sure they were gaining. I had one that was not, I still worry about him. Mine will be 5 weeks on Sunday. I thought they were gaining almost an ounce a day for the first couple of weeks. It gets better though. Now they will open their eyes and start moving around. My guys just started running around, they are just adorable. Is this your first litter? Have you posted pics? I'll go see now!

| By the way Hi, I am new and have not really read everything on how to use this but I have an emergency question. To make a long story short, I got a female Yorkie adult from a breeder and never heard from the breeder again when I asked questions. She got pregnant with one of my males...I am not a breeder. She had a C-section, the first was in the birth canal too long and died, the other 2 a male and a female made it until this morning when I found the male dead. The female seems okay but I am not sure if she is eating. I have been bottle feeding since day 1 and the mama finally on day 2 was taking care of them, licking them but wasn't producing milk. I would squeeze the nipples but don't know if I did it right and got no milk. The puppy is sucking on them but I don't know if she has gotten any. I tried to bottle feed but she didn't want it. She has not gained any weight in 2 days as far as I can tell with my digital postal scale cause she squirms a lot. Would she cry if she was hungry. Can I assume she is getting milk from mama? Thank you for any help you can give me. I don't have a car and can't get to a vet and so you guys are my only help at this time, which is greatly appreciated. Robbin By the way...I did have her spayed at the time of the C-section so we won't be going through this again. Last edited by 59brooklyn; 06-27-2005 at 10:13 AM. Reason: adding a line |

| 59brooklyn, I replied to your other post. Laura, I wonder if they were warm enough then, the vet said they were (because that was the biggest concern for me to start out with) but I know that many breeders seem to have more knowledge than the vets with certian things.... They are now 17 days old now, and one has both eyes open, one has one open and the other neither are open, they are trying to walk and it is the cutest thing. The vet said to put the room to 75 now, which means their area will be a couple degrees warmer, but maybe I will put the room temp back up again. Thank you for the information- congrats on your pups I do have a couple of pics up. Shelbies heart- I hope they stop growing so fast, they have slowed down somewhat, but they are still gaining each day. I imagine once they start moving, that will change. Thank you for your reply. thanks again brenda |
