My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Newborn eating question ! I had 2 babies born yesterday and had a question. The boy is smaller than the girl and seems a little slower than her too. He was born first (naturally) after the vet moved him up into the birth canal better. Once born they never forced him on a nipple so he was pretty much all day not on and then Meiah had a c section and he was seperated from her. Once home, I was able to get him on. But I never see him on, on his own. And I'm not able to get him on now either. When we got home last night he weighed 4 oz (116 grams) He hasn't lost weight , today he weighs 4 3/8 oz (122 grams) BUT I have not seen him on her eating so I'm a little concerned about him. Should I ? Should I start to supplement him? I'm just worried about him and may be over reacting but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I slept right next to them and did fall to sleep a few times but still have not seen him on her on his own and so far today I can't get him to latch on. And no weight loss. What do you think? |

| pup He is warm and not crying..but moves around normal, correct..what I mean to say is..He is not just laying there limply?? When you pick up him and disturb him does he have a healthy squeal, muscle tone feel strong??? Lift up the skin on his neck and see if it bounces back normally or is he dehyrated? If he is not losing and nto crying, acting fine,, he must be nursing..you can give him a suppilmental feeding if concerned. I have had many who nurse non-stop and others who nurse a few seconds and are full...watch his weight..that will tell you what is going on.. |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | He's warm, he only crys if mom gets out and he's awake, he moves around, twitches when sleeping, his belly is round, but small. I have been testing both of their skins and they bounce back at the same rate. To me...the skin stands up longer than if I pinch my own, so I was thinking he was dehydrated, but the girls bounces back at the same pace. So that I'm not to sure about. I've been testing his since he was born since he hadn't latched on at the vets. And he gained, so I don't know? I'm watching his weight like a hawk. I'm hoping I'm just over reacting. |

| That's good that you're checking to make sure you see each of them eat. Like Pat said, there are alot of other factors that can confirm his good health also. Maybe he's a little stubborn. I bet you'll catch him soon. |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | I can deff tell a difference between him and his sister. She is stronger than him. Which surprises me because she was the one we thought was not alive as she went thru 13 hours of labor., and was the c section baby. He came 1st naturally. I had him latched on yesterday. Today so far I had him latched on once and he stayed on maybe 30 seconds., then went back to sleep. Should I just sit back and see how things go and see if he gains or loses? |

| His weight gain or loss should tell you alot. I bet he's sneaking in when you're not looking Like YorkieRose, I've also had some that nurse all the time and some that only nurse for a few seconds and are full. Seems as tho he's doing everything he should be doing. Just keep a close eye on his weight. |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | I just bottle fed him. He sucked for a few seconds and was done with it and got pissed at me for trying to put it back in his mouth. I'm just concerned about this litter since it was a hard labor. His sister is very strong and sucks longer than him. I've never supplimented along with mom before. I've bottle fed one pup last year that had a cleft and couldn't eat from mom, but never supplimented. How often should I try? Does it matter? |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Will supplimenting him make him rely on me and not try to nurse mom, or will it help him to get stronger to go ahead and get a nipple on his own (like I'm hoping) ? |

| You know, I don't think so (but others exp. could tell us otherwise). With a bottle he is still using his sucking reflexes. Just as long as you put him to her often. It won't take long for him to get strong enough to really see a difference of him nursing at her teat. He'll start nursing more vigorously like sis. Right now he needs her colostrum, so I'd put him to her first then bottle feed. |

Supplimenting will assure he is getting fed, he needs strength to latch on, on his own...if you have nutridrops, put a drop on your finger and give him one three times a day for the next couple days as well. Also weigh them morning, noon and night to monitor weight gain... gl with the new little ones

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Thanks, I have nuti-drops and will start that tonight. yeah his sis, for sure sucks more vigorously. I've been weighing him every hour I know, overkill, but I'm one of those worry warts. I guess I'll just keep on him and we'll see. He's a cute tiny bugger!!!! |
