| Need weaning help! Help! have to wean puppies early My dam has had a problem with an engorged (to the point of possible infection) milk sac since the puppies were born three weeks ago. I have tried to get them to nurse in a different area, and she pushes them right back to where they started. They are now three weeks old, and the vet said that I should start weaning them so I can make sure that they are getting enough to eat. This is the second day.....and things seem to be going well so far. They seem to be a little more active and alert. Does anyone have any tips on weaning they would like to share? _

| Try 'gruel' in the seach box. Quite a bit of info should come up.

Donating YT 14K Club Member | At three weeks of age, I am not sure that they'll be able to lap it up themselves. Duke is 5 weeks old today and is just able to do it on his own. You can syringe feed them that way you know exactly how much they are getting. Best of luck!

| thanks everyone for the best wishes and advice. I have been feeding them with an eye dropper(Naturall C) replacement milk from the vet. I am going to mix up some gruel or whelping pudding tomorrow and try a little of that....morning and evening. I still let their mom in the whelping nest to be with them, but not until after they are fed. She still cleans up after them and throws a fit if I keep her away from them too long!! She is a conscientious mommy!! I am still concerned for her milk sac, however, because it is still big and quite warm. I will be taking her to the vet on Monday.....maybe they will give her a shot to dry her milk up? The puppies are no where near ready to eat out of a bowl!!

| If I have to hand feed, mine never like those darn bottles. It seems like the formula won't come out and if I put some extra holes in it comes out to fast. They make premie bottles for babies and I am trying to supplement a Frenchie pup right now. He wanted nothing to do with than nipple type either So I use a syringe with a tip on the end and SLOWLY give the formula. You can get a really small 1 cc syringe or a 3 cc syringe. You will want to feel the tummy to make sure it is full / firm. I don't think a eye dropper will get the job done to fill them up. I feed mine until they turn away from the syringe and their tummy feels full. Burp them too like a baby. There is a formula you could use with weight of pup and the amount of cc/ml per feeding but I couldn't find it as I write this. I will look again. Myself I don't think they would be ready for gruel drinking from a dish you could try I guess. |

BANNED! | I recommend syringe feeding, at 3 weeks old I doubt they will get the hang of eating from a saucer or small bowl just yet. If mom eats next to them while they watch her sometimes they will get curious and give it a try themselves, but 3 weeks probably is still to young. Goats milk works well and as they grow I add baby rice cereal to mine for consistancy. Mine are 5 weeks old and just starting to show interest in eating from a saucer with mom. Mostly they walk thru it and get it more on them then in their mouth at this age. |

| Momma's milk sac is hanging really low, and is still warm. (she is on antibiotics) The vet told me to cover up her nipples so they couldn't nurse. I got a woman's sock and cut holes for her legs and tail at the toe of the sock, and slid it up over her torso. Works really well and takes the pressure off the hanging sac. Downside is, have to take it off to go potty. I took her in the pool today and walked around the water holding her close......letting her torso float......she loved it!

| Thank you, I'm trying! My little Piper is the sweetest thing ever, and she is still very attentive to the pups. She doesn't like it too much that I am picking them up and feeding them, but she seems to understand not to stay in the whelping box long enough for them to nurse.
