BANNED! | Breeders- What polite way do you let people down?? What is your polite and soft way of letting people know you don't feel they are a proper fit for your puppies. I am finding out that there are tons of people wanting Yorkie puppies who can't actually afford them. They seem to think they can beg, trade or whatever necessary to get a 200.00(not very Possible) healthy puppy. How can anyone afford to take care of a puppies well being, needs and medical care when they can't even afford the cost of the puppy?? What are some of the polite and soft ways you tell people they cannot have one of your puppies???? |

| Well, that is a bit of a tough one as many think we make tons of money selling puppies which I guess some do. And many will sell to anyone anyway. You could just say you have nothing available at that price range and wish them good luck in their search. . |

Ihave had people yell at me threaten me etc so now I just don't admit to having anything for sale until I do some interviewing first. I don't advertise so it is easy to do. The ones that don't want to answer any questions or I get yes/no answers volunteering no information, I tell them I don't have anything and won't be breeding again for some time.

| Are you saying they all want a 200 dollar puppy, or that they are just not what you would consider a good home? In either case, I'd just say sorry, the puppy is no longer available. You are not fibbing, you're not making it available to them. Someone once offered me furniture for a puppy. Cracked me up. Now on the flip side of your post, If there is someone who can pay the asking price, but wants to do it slowly over time until the puppy is ready, I would not think in every case that means the person cannot afford to properly care for the puppy. It may be hard for some people to come up with a certain amount of money at once when they have bills just like every one else to pay each week. I have allowed people to do that and it has worked out fine. These were not people who could not afford to take care of a puppy. These were people being responsible in making sure their obligations at home were paid for, and that they were able to purchase everything they needed for their new puppy while making payments until it was ready. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Have a nice collection of Stuffed Animals to choose from - when it gets a little 'gritty' - offer to sell them one. |

Some have only 200.00 and want to trade just about anything in their home. Others just don't fit the criteria for what I would consider a good home or proper fit for my furbabies. Payments for the right home seems like it may work for a few cases, but I still have concerns they wouldn't be able to handle vet bills or emergencies with a puppy. I find alot of people seem to think there's some big profit from breeding Yorkies.(boy are they wrong). Thx for your feedback on this I really appreciate everyones ideas and ways of doing this. | Hi..I'm not a breeder, but I just wanted to add something here. If someone comes looking for a Yorkie and thinks that they can get one that's from a good breeder and is healthy for $200 (or whatever....), then they aren't really aware of how much they normally cost. And if they don't know that, then they havent' really done any research on them; they've probably just seen other's and think they're cute. I can't blame them. And like you say, could they afford to care for them (not just loving them, but the veterinary costs just for the routine stuff is a cost, and if anything goes wrong with them, which any dog owner realizes, can cost thousands of unbudgeted dollars)? I think it would be helpful as a potential buyer to have someone tell me that stuff. Not that people are intentionally stupid, but sometimes you just get a bee in your bonnet and decide "I'm gonna get me a Yorkie"...or whatever it is. And you don't think about the actual cost of it or how you'll care for it once you get it home other than the basic food and water. I'm only saying this b/c when I decided many years ago, that I wanted a parrot....I had NO IDEA at all what they cost or what their care entailed...I mean, bird seed, some veggies...a cage...how hard could that be???? I went to an exotic bird store and was thinking before I stepped in..."how much could a BIRD cost, for heaven's sake?....I figure...$200....maybe $300 at the MOST" . So when I get inside, I see THE most beautiful bird I'd ever seen in my life...and thought maybe I'd get one of those....I asked how much it cost and the guy told me "$7000" . I thought he was joking....so I said "SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS????"...and he told me "well, we have a lay away plan; you can pay for it in 3 installments" ...so, I went home, got every book and magazine I could and READ for several years, decided what kind of bird I really wanted and SAVED my money for it. I know this is long, but I just wanted to point out that sometimes, people really need to be educated, so that they can make the right decision not just for them, but for the dog that they think they want. It's hard I know to have to tell people how much goes into taking good care of an animal, and granted, not everyone has the same concept of "good care", but I just know that I'm glad that I got some good advice along the way, and that I didn't come up against someone selling their birds for $200.....I would have ended up with most likely, a sick or ill tempered pet, that I wouldnt' have been very happy with and not known how to really take care of them. I know this probably isn't any help, but just something to keep in mind. I don't blame you for wanting to make sure that your babies are going into good homes; I'd respect someone for being so fastidious and go home and start saving my money til I could afford to buy one from someone like you and make sure I could take care of it!

That's why it would depend on the individual person. Ever had puppies available at tax time? That's a big concern of mine. People have a pocket full of money from their taxes, and can pay for a puppy at once, but who's to say it will get what it needs afterwards. Thats why its so important to get to know people better before making a decision.

| The best way is to prescreen people have a list of questions for them without letting them know you have puppies available. Like Lorraine, I've found it easier to do this when you don't advertise. If you look at her website it says something about inquiries invited, but puppies are not always readily available....anyway something to that affect. Wording such as that, keeps you in the drivers seat on where you let your puppies go

| I am the same way as Mardelin pointed out. I never advertise individual puppies. My site says something along the lines of "feel free to contact me to inquire when I MAY have puppies available" That way, it gives me the option to ask my list of questions before I ever mention what I may have. The first question when I get a call is usually "hi i was wondering if you had any puppies available?" and my response usually starts out along the lines of "hi, thanks for your consideration of me, may I start out by asking you a few questions?" And I go from there. |

I suppose just for you having the honor of saying you have one of your dogs in the white house, right? Celebrities are the worse ones to work with, not that they don't want to pay. Just that they want it when they want it.
