HELP NOW....Esbilac...How much to give? Tiffanie is drying (I kinda thought she might with having so many, she never did with her 1st litter but what a diffrence 2 more can make) (3 teats dried up now, Started hand feed yesterday evening)up due to her having so many pups, I took her to the vet today and she said replace with Esbilac...I ask the vet how much, She said whatever the Esbilac says...(Well the Esbilac can says 2 TABLESPOON's per 4 oz of body weight...The daily feeding amount should be divided into equal portions for each feeding.) Is CC's the same as ML's??? Vet gave me a syringe that has 1.0 ml on it...How much would I give of these syringes? 1 or 2 syringes or just 1/2 or like 0.4 ml??? I just don't want to overfeed or underfeed. They can eat off her 1st vet said but then I need to feed every 2 hours round the clock....I don't mind doing it I love feeding them. Can U all help me. I tried the bottles but they have a hard time getting it out, so I thought until they get a little older then I can syringe feed. Any tips in this...I had to bottle feed Isabella some but she took to it & nursed off Tiffiany, NONE of these will suck right to get it out of the nipple...I've tried making more holes in the nipple with a needle heated (Just like I did when I had Heather 23 years ago!), but I'm afraid I'm not doing it right, maybe I'm just nervous??? Any help apprecaited. They are gaining weight. I'll post weights in the nursery section later, got to feed now!! Hugs, Lee & Babies

| Thankfully, I've never had to hand feed. But yes, ml and cc are the same. 5cc is 1 tsp. I do know that when you feed out of the syringe, just tap the end so that they get just little bits at a time. You want to be very careful that it doesn't go into their lungs. With the bottles, is there adequate ventilation so the air can get in to let the milk down? Maybe try not screwing the rings on too tightly so the air can get through. Also, you can rub the roof of their mouth with the nipple to encourage them to suck. You can also scratch them on the top of the head. Might take a 2nd person to help with that. It's hard to hold a squirmy baby, feed and scratch all at the same time! Good luck!

I hate those little bottles they sell for feeding puppies. I have never gotten one to work with those hard nipples and I have tried many. I went and bought the smallest nipple I could find for premies with the slowest drip and used that and it worked alot better. I also just syringed a tiny amount very slowely being careful not to aspirate them and they would suck a little out of the end of the syringe that way. I have heard you can stick a nipple on the end of the syringe but have never tried it myself.

My female had 6 also and a section (first pup was sideways blocking the train for the rest) I did not think she had much milk either but all the babes gained. Her bag was always small and never full,we did supplement them. She did not have time to fill her bag for they kept depleting it as fast as she could make it.Her milk did pick up but it took her a couple of weeks. Ours were tiny and 1-2 ccs was plenty for them and filled thier tummys. I used a bottle and cut a crisscross in the top (or my vet did). They had to suck to get it out but not a fast flow (like when you use a needle and make a hole) for they can aspirate and you do not want that.I would not use a dropper or syringe.I would rather tube them ,faster and safer if they cannot suck well yet. I have one that likes to suck on my finger yet and they are 8 weeks.

I faced this same problem. I found it extremely difficult to feed through any puppy bottles as well. I used an eye dropper and it worked much better, however, a very small drop to the hair on the mouth and they will lick it. Eventually they will suck the eye dropper. I also kept some Nutracal on hand if they seemed weak, but you have to feed them after nutracal. I would just give about the same amount as the end of a matchstick to the weak puppy. He would perk up and then I would feed him. The puppies that looked active would nurse first. I was terrified that they would aspirate to their lungs when I was feeding them. As they get bigger, a premie nipple from your hospital's nursey will work much better, the blue ones for neonatal. Just as an aside, my vet told me that our female was drying up. I had him give her fluids subq, we did this 6 times over two weeks because she would not drink and it worked. Moms must be hydrated and eat well to produce milk just like humans. I would put the puppies on the nipple and let then suck for 10- 15 minutes to stimulate her milk production then I would supplement with Esbilac. I put the best suckers on the teets that were drying up and the runts towards the back where there was more milk. I found that vets just like doctors are quick to throw in the towel on nursing. After all, they do not have to feed those puppies. Frankly, I do not think that they know alot about whelping and nursing. Breeders tend to know alot more than my vet anyway. I hope that they also told you that the puppies must poop after feeding and that requires a warm wet rag rubbed on their behinds to stimulate a bowel movement. Just like Mom. Hope this info helps.
