| Saw a lady about a pup..... I went today and visited this lady, to meet her and the Sire and Dam of the pup for sale. First question is what is a puppy mill? What I saw.... an older lady who owns quite a bit of land, she owns roughly 5 miniture horses and 25 regular horses, outside it looked like a shelter, I've been to an animal shelter before, there were about approximately 7 pins lined up with about 3 to 4 dogs per pin, she had 4 breeds. The pins were clean the dogs seems healthy and happy, they looked a little dirty obviously becasue they are outside dogs, the yorkies had summer cuts, she had a seperate building "the nursery" there were 3 pins in there with two mama yorkies and pups and a very pregnant poodle. There was another building that she said was for her grooming she does, and then another building were in was pups that had access to the building and an outside pin, there were two poodles on one side and then a poodle and a yorkie on the other side. Like I said they looked healthy to me I petted most of the dogs and they actually seemed overfed not slinder at all. Now it smelled like dog and dog poop but I didn't see any anywhere, each pin had water bowls and food bowls and shelter from sun and dog houses, I did ask her if she lets them run free since I noticed her property was fenced in but she said "Oh no they would probably get out" so that kinda made me sad knowing that they are confined to a pinned area no bigger then a 4 door car size for life. Would this be considered a puppy mill? She said she had all papers on the pups and they are AKC, she is asking $800. Should I stay away, should I ask more questions, what should I ask? Oh she did mention that she does keep some of the dogs inside she said one of each breed. hummmm don't know what to do, mom is about the size and color I am looking for, and dad also...But then again how do I know who the true dad is???? What do you all think? |

| I'm not sure if it was a mill or not ?? but having that many breeds and dogs sounds like a major red flag. how many dogs do you think she had? |

| Kinda sounds like it to me. Dogs are forever locked in a small area; bred over and again - I assume. I wouldnt feel comfortable buying from somebody like that; it is very sad for the dogs.

| That makes me feel sad thinking about all those babies locked up like that. There's lots of breeders on here that keep their babies in their homes with them. Not to say this particular breeder is bad - but dogs are not farm animals.

| i don't like it.....it sounds too much like someone who is just breeding. no care about the breed and not breeding to improve the breed to the standard. i don't know if i would call it a puppy mill but it is somewhat close. i just don't like the sound of it

| I remember seeing 3 shizus (sp) in the first pin, 4 yrokies, then 3 poodles, 3 yorkies, 3 more shizus, and 2 more yorkies, 3 mamas in nursery, 5 new born pups total 2 inside dogs, then 4 more 3 month olds, so I guess about 35 or so. Last edited by TPerusquia; 04-22-2007 at 07:37 AM. |

| Honestly, it just doesn't sound right Too many dogs and too many breeds I know the price sounds good, but remember that sometimes dogs with the "right price" end up being much more expensive than a well bred dog from a reputable breeder who does genetic testing, bile acid testing, etc. for just a little bit more. Go with your gut, but if you ask my opinion, I would say, stay away...
