I haven't taken her in for x-rays yet...still too soon, but I'm anxious to find out.

You've already had one x-ray taken? I was afraid more than one xray could possibly hurt the babies. I'm planning on taking her June 11th or 12th. That way they can measure and hopefully make sure she'll have room to deliver.

It was a little early (day 45), but I brought her in today for x-rays. They told me at the animal hospital that there was no danger in taking a second x-ray, so I made an appointment for June 15th (she's due on the 19th), just to make sure the pups are not too large.

They were very nice at the hospital. I'm a newbie at this, so it's kind of confusing, when you hear all kinds of things all over the place. They were telling me that it's a good thing that she's having three instead of two or even only one, as is often the case with these small breeds. They said that the fewer babies, the larger they are.

Anyways, I hope all goes well for you guys... :-)

Thank you I hope all goes well for you also. And thanks for letting me know about the 2nd x-ray being okay. I'll check with my Vet since she is so big and see if she needs one now and then again later.

Hello All, I've been so busy trying to get things done before we have of 2nd batch of doll babies!! I'll post photos tomorrow or Sunday of her, I'm gonna trim her ears, behind, paws and belly 1st. Anyway I posted this further down in this section and thought I'd add it here to see if I can get some answers on it. Anyways... I can't wait, I'm so so excited!!! She didn't go into heat until late...She was due to go in Feb. but didn't go until April. I really thought she was going to skip this heat cycle thinking that maybe by her having her 1st litter it threw her off. She was late last Fall too (We didn't breed in the Fall, skipped a heat to give her a rest, she's rested for a year now!) Well to my suprise here she went. Boy she is different with this litter! She is SO MUCH BIGGER then the 1st litter which was born on May 4, 06. Now she looks like she's gonna pop, she is just layin' around, I thought well she needs to be alone, without her son and hubby, so I put her in the living room with her bed (The 2 boys kept taking all the beds every time Tiffanie got in one they'd root her out and she just let them have it) we have lamaite floors in the kitchen and living room so I put a rug down for her too to lay on, she isn't moving much, don't play, no running now, no jumpin' in the kitchen chairs like she does when she is without puppies, no jumpin' on the couch. I think she's gonna have more then 4 this litter. With each diffrent litter do they act different? Also does their belly hurt when they are growing with puppies? I know ours is uncomfortable when we're going to have a baby!! I know that sounds silly but she is biting on my shoe trays and she has NEVER done this before, she did it to the kitchen and living room one, needless to say as soon as I caught her I put them up. She has Kongs and toys to bite on, blankies and me, we sleep in the same room (Living room) now!! Until the puppies are here and bigger I sleep in the same room with her! Sounds nuts I know but I don't want anything to happen to her or our babies!! I have to wonder if it isn't because her belly is bigger and she hurts more with her filling out so much more then with her 1st litter. With her 1st litter I kept saying she wasn't having any...(She's like 10.5 lbs is her normal weight, when she is without puppies) puppies, (She didin't get as big as she is with this litter) until the week before and I felt them move I told the vet she had gas or babies. I took her to the vet on Sat the vet checked her and said she was going to have 3 or 4 and said no ultrasound or X-Ray and she had them that following Thru. had 4. So what do U all think, could she be having more puppies or just bigger from her last litter. Hugs and Love, Lee, Teddy, Tiffanie and Sir. Galahad

This was (at first) devastating to my husband and I because Tiffany was only 10 months old at the time. I was really worried. . .sick, but then my vet made me feel a LOT better about the situation. He said that she should be just fine and that the Chihuahua puppies are usually very small too and that everything should be just fine. I took her back in at 45 days as suggested by the vet - to get an Xray to find out how many pups. This proved useless due to the fact that the puppies were so small - they couldn't get a very good Xray and just cost me $249.

Tiffany is 60 days and counting now and has not started nesting or panting. She competely stopped eating her Eukanuba dry food very early on. Since the whole dog food scare - I looked online for a good homemade dog food recipe and found one that consisted of boiled chicken (or cooked hamburger - but I use the chicken), white or brown rice, oatmeal, and carrots. She LOVED this for awhile. . .starting picking out the chicken and eating only that. So, I just fed her boiled chicken. Then she smelled our steak one evening and just HAD to have that!!! So, now I feed her chicken/steak or a combo of both now. MAN SHE IS A PICKY LITTLE (cute/sweet) BITCH!!!

I was feeling MUCH BETTER and even getting EXCITED about the litter - the Vet felt 3 maybe 4 (very very early on) and I now feel 3 (???) 2 FOR SURE!! The Vet Tech she thinks 3 as well. BUT. . .I READ ON HERE LAST NIGHT THAT SHE COULD DIE AT AN EARLY AGE FROM GIVING BIRTH SO YOUNG AND I AM TOTALLY FREAKED OUT!!!!! I LOVE THIS LITTLE DOG MORE THAN ANYTHING AND I LOST MY SASHA A WEEK BEFORE I GOT TIFFANY AND I JUST WON'T BE ABLE TO GO THROUGH THAT AGAIN ANYTIME SOON!!! MAN, I WAS A MESS FOR A SOLID WEEK - UNTIL I GOT TIFFANY - AND JUST THINKING ABOUT IT AGAIN CAUSED TEARS TO STREAM DOWN MY FACE JUST NOW!!! ok - I'm better now. . .

ANYWAY. . .I am afraid she might have to have a C-Section and then will reject the little babies, I am afraid I could lose her, I am afraid that she might just BURST because she has gained 2 whole pounds - as of yesterday - now was a whopping 5.4 lbs.!!!

AM I JUST FREAKING OUT OVER THE MESSAGE BOARD POST I READ??
BECAUSE THE VET SAID SHE SHOULD BE JUST FINE!!

Now PLEASE!!! DON'T ANYONE COMPLETELY TRY AND FREAK ME OUT, BUT SHOULD I BE WORRIED??? WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT WOULD BE GOOD RIGHT ABOUT NOW - AS SHE IS ON HER 60TH DAY RIGHT NOW!!

ANYONE OUT THERE THAT HAS HAD A YORKIE THAT GOT PREGNANT YOUNG AND GAVE (natural) BIRTH TO A LITTER AND HAD NO PROBLEMS AFTER??

I would appreciate any and all help with this - I have only (before Sasha) bred Golden Retrievers and they never had any issues - at all. I understand with this tiny little breed - that I feel madly in love with (at first sight!) there are different concerns because of their size and all, and she is very young. . .but COME ON!!! I just want to be HAPPY for her!!!

OH. . .and before anyone says anything about I should have watched over her and kept her away from males, etc.. . .I DID!!! I brought her in - and was putting her in the kennel as the phone rang - my daughter was taking her dog out - and they both ran into the bathroom - and BAM!! IT WAS DONE - I HEARD THAT TELL TALE YELP AND THAT WAS THAT!!! WHEN WE ALL RAN INTO THE BATHROOM - THEY WERE ALREADY FACING AWAY FROM EACHOTHER - WOW!!! HOW THE HECK DOES THAT HAPPEN!!??!! SHE WAS EVEN WEARING AN XSMALL DENIM DIAPER WITH A PAD ON!!!!! TRICKY RICK HAD HIS WAY WITH HER IN A MATTER OF SECONDS!!! LITERALLY!!! I WAS A BIT UPSET - BUT MY HUSBAND!!! WOW!!! YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT SOMEONE WAS HAVING THEIR WAY WITH ONE OF HIS DAUGHTERS RIGHT THERE IN THAT BATHROOM. . .HE WAS LIVID!!! WE ARE ALL VERY VERY CONCERNED - I AM JUST TRYING TO BE HAPPY FOR HER!!! I AM HAPPY FOR HER. . .THEY ARE GOING TO BE THE CUTEST, HAPPIEST, HEALTHIEST LITTER OF CHORKIES AND LIL BABY MOMMA IS GOING TO BE JUST FINE. . .RIGHT!??!

I haven't read to the end of this post yet, but wanted to respond before I couldn't find this one again! Yes, Rosie also got pregnant her first heat - on accident. She was 10 months old also, and my step daughter (who as 5 at the time) let her out of her crate. I was worried sick about her! But I have never heard anything about giving birth at a young age decreasing their life span - my vet also assured me that all would be well. Due to a very unfortuneate car accident on the way to the vet (because she ran into some problems - she was only 4 lbs at the time and was not birthing the puppies) I was a nervous wreck and we were in a very bad car accident! Long story short (and quite a miracle!) Rosie gave birth to two healthy puppies while I was being rushed to the ER (I wouldn't let the ambulance take me until my vet arrived at the accident scene!) but because of the trauma, Rosie didn't do well with her first litter. So, maybe because she is young she won't necessarily know what to do, but alot will depend on if her mamma was good with her, and how old she was taken away from her mamma. (That is where they learn how to take care of their own babies).

Now I will finish reading the post...

Lots of interesting information out there - I am surprised at the cost of x-rays, etc. elsewhere. I paid approximately $37 for the x-rays and $26 for the office visit. Every time the x-rays have been extremely accurate, and so I have never done the ultrasound. When Rosie had to have a c-section, that cost me $289 for everything. Oh, except the $75 emergency fee that they charge for coming in at 4 a.m.

Hell, I need to move to Michigan with this dog...!!!

They told me yesterday it would cost approximately 700$ for a scheduled c-section, if she needed one... and double that (even up to 2 grand!!!) if it was an emergency operation... I'm praying very very hard everything goes well...!!!

Well, I don't know much, but what I do know is from a sure source. The vet I saw yesterday (from a University teaching hospital) told me that the x-rays were important for many reasons, the first being that you know exactly how many babies you should be expecting. This way, if they say four and everything stops after three (no fourth puppy after an hour), you know you have a problem and you need to take your dog in immediately. They even told me there was no danger in having a second x-ray taken.

You said she was in heat in April, so she'd be due sometime in June, just like Bo. I would strongly suggest an x-ray, especially if she's so big. Otherwise, how will you know what to look for?

I definitely agree with getting x-rays - your vet should be able to tell the best time for them to be the most accurate. It is SOO important for so many reasons - mainly as stated above - this way you know how many puppies to expect. In addition, say you have a smaller mamma (4 - 5 lbs pre-pregnancy) and she is only carrying one to two puppies. Well, that would be almost a guarenteed c-section because the puppies are going to be bigger (6 - 7 oz each vs. 4 oz) which makes all the difference in passing through the birth canal. 3 puppies is just about perfect for a small mamma for natural birth, because more than three, and she could become so tired after the third that she just stops pushing, and then you have a problem delivering the 4th.

In addition, a good vet will be able to estimate more accurately when the puppies will be born - this is important for those whose mamma's got pregnant accidently.

You are soooo reassuring... THANK YOU!

Bo was 6lbs pre-pregnancy... and she's having three. The father is 4lbs. I guess(hope?) that would make it "optimum conditions"...

Hello there, I took her to the Vet last time and he was truthful with me, he said he wasn't that good @ reading ultrasounds, and he might miss 1 with an X-Ray, said 3 or 4 and she had 4, they all turned out fine and so did she (Not saying that something won't go wrong this time. I just pray it don't), they are in my cell phone if I need help. I just read all I could about whelping on the internet, printed out the pages, had my whelping box and kit ready, started taking her temp that sat. when we came back from the vet and kept a close eye on her, matter of fact I thought they would come that night that she had them for her temp. was down, so I was laying down on my couch taking a nap when here she was trying to have her 1st baby on me while I was nappin'! I got her to her whelping box which was right beside the couch and out came Sir. Galahad, @ 2:47 pm. Weight: 4.8 oz. then Sir. Lancelot, @ 3:32 pm. Weight: 5.8 oz., (He wasn't breathing either when he was born, so I suctioned his nose and mouth out and started rubbing him and he was breathing) then here came Princess Isabella @ 3:51 pm. Weight: 4.4 oz. and then @ 4:44 pm here came Princess Arimathea Weight: 5 oz. So I think she will be okay. See between our last 2 girls it took her almost an hour to have her last one. Here is her photos, I cut her hair down on her legs cause when I went to trim each one she moved and I gapped every single one so I just trimmed them down. I left her hair long everywhere else, except for her belly and her ears and bottom. She is from my date of her and Teddy being together (He is the Father to her 1st litter too and weighs around 6 lbs.) On day 42. She I figure will be due anywhere from June, 22 to the 26th. I will be ready a week before. I just have to get her whelping box in and I already have everything else there for her and our babies. So now I'm just keeping her calm and cool until our day arrives. I figure if I can keep her calm enough to where she don't have them before June 18th then their lungs will be stong enough for them! Hugs, Lee, Teddy, Tiffanie & Sir. Galahad

Default help! whelping now!!

Does anyone know if it is normal for a yorkie to have one pup & not have another one for 8 hrs or more? I can feel another one & she pushes when I rub her tummy for awhile but not enough, she isn't struggling, she went for a walk outside & is loving on her baby.
