Missing Yoshi Everyday! Donating Member | Inbreeding vs Linebreeding I would like some more information about the difference in the 2. I once went to look at some puppies that were produce by half cousins. Meaning both the parents shared the same grandpa. Maybe it was my human instinct that could not get pass the idea of cousins creating babies. But after some research many breeders do linebreeding to correct a fault or continue the line. But what are the pros and cons of linebreeding? And what differs it from inbreeding? Would it affect them from reproducing to their full extent? Or would that lessen the numbers of puppies per litter? I just have so any question regarding this subject. Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

| I went to look at some puppies locally before I got Holly and they were "line bred" as well. I was the same as you...it made me a bit uneasy. But I am not educated on the subject...it was just my initial instinct I will look forward to this thread to hear more about it. |

| Inbreeding is the breeding of closely related individuals, no further separated in the pedigree than one generation: brother to sister, son to dam, sire to daughter, or half-brother to half-sister. It reduces the gene pool and can either turn out very good or very bad since it doubles the chance for the desired traits but also the hidden undesired traits. Linebreeding brings together individuals further removed than one generation: grandfather to granddaughter, cousins, aunt to nephew. Usually the individuals are closely related to a common ancestor but are little, if at all, related to each other ( 2 dogs that happen to share a grandfather). Both methods should be used with care by those that are very knowledgable about their stock and their lines. If you'd like to learn more about it check out The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog by Anne Seranne, it's an excellent book.

| Let me start by saying that I have very little knowledge of linebreeding, mainly because it is not something I practice, nor do I have the need for it. I have never heard of it correcting a problem, but have heard that some will use it to force an undesired trait to present itself in the offspring. Not to say the practice can't be used in an appropriate manner, but any instance I've ever run across where it was actively being practiced it was being done to reduce size. I think some people try it without knowing what they are doing because they were told by someone that it would result in smaller dogs. (Which theoretically would mean it could also produce larger dogs.) In any case, I think many times the term/practice is used by people looking for a quick way to get some tiny pups without thinking or dealing with the negative aspects that come with it. "So what if it produced some serious off bites or LP...we got some teacups!" |
