My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Rabies Shots I met a breeder who doesn't give her dogs rabies shots. Is this normal? I mean, is there anyone who doesn't give rabies shots? I have not done any business with her, just over heard a conversation she was having. How do dogs actually GET rabies? I just thought I'd through it on here and see what everyone thinks. |

| Dogs can get rabies from other dogs that have it or wild animals.. I know there have been other people on here that said they go without the rabies shot. I would never. I have possums and raccoons that come into my yard at times and I am in the City

| unfortunately, there are a lot of people who don't get rabies, how dumb. Rabies VC's don't cost that much and at least you know they are protected. Did she mean her puppies? Cause they are usually too young to give rabies VC's before they go to their forever homes, or is she talking about her own dogs?

No Longer a Member | I hope that what I say doesn't spark a heated debate, but I'm assuming she's one of those who doesn't vax at all. I know someone who does that, and they seem to believe that the dogs build natural immunity from their environment. Now this person I know, I believe she does give rabies because it is required for the county license, but she doesn't do any of the other vaccines. To me, it is like the group of people who don't vaccinate their children. A lot of them believe that vaccinations are so bad that they are what are really making their kids sick. They believe, like the anti-vaccination dog people, that people can develop natural immunity from their environment. What I hear is, "so and so has never been sick, so I guess that proves it." To me, what it proves is that they are in an environment where everyone already vaccinates, and therefore, the chances of them getting these diseasses is lessened because of THAT. I think it is frightening. All we need is more unvaccinated dogs to start carrying the diseases into areas that might not have them if they were vaccinated. Just my $.02. |

| In most states the rabies shot is the ONLY shot that your dog MUST get... not that I've seen the rabies police come after anyone.... but... I wouldn't want to be the person of a dog who bites someone and their dog DOESN'T have a rabies shot. My dogs get the 3 year rabies shot.... I think with older dogs you probably no longer have to have anything done because all the years of getting shots have made them immune to just about everything.

| I know some people try to keep vaccinations to a minimum and go with just one distemper, one parvo and one rabies when the pup is small, and just get the pups tested for antibodies every year during annual visits instead of re-vaccinating whether the dog has antibodies or not. When it comes to not vaccinating dogs at all, I have also heard that it is possible for dogs to have antibodies because when you vaccinate your dog, your dog sheds some of the virus. Any dog that is exposed to that small amount of the virus builds antibodies. It is like natural vaccination. That is how wild dog clans build up their immunities against some diseases. Not vaccinating at all seems very risky to me because clearly you cannot steak out newly vaccinated dogs and expose your dogs to them so they will build immunities to diseases. It is definitely a topic worth researching.

| Different opinions... Hello all, I guess there are a variety of opinions out there. I believe our dog vacc. exist for a reason. The state only requires the rabies one because that is the one that most protects humans. State doesn't care about parvo because parvo doesn't really kill humans, rabies does. So for the health of our pups, who cares what the state requires, and lets do what's best for them! So if greater research shows the vacc. to be a positive thing, then why not just them vacc. and be done with it? Trusted vets and breeders are a must though. This is just my opinion. Raquel

| rabies I live in Hawaii where there are no rabies...I plan on vaccinating my puppy for rabies anyway.. it is required if ever the dog goes to mainland which is always a possibility. Hawaii law also requires microchipping all dogs which I truly believe is a great idea. I had a litter of pups that got vaccinated and then got parvo even after the vacc., so it is never 100%...lost 3 of them. So, just my two cents1 Aloha, Lia and Mya;s mom |

| rabies It is quite different for a pet owner and a breeder..I never used to give them..(over 25 yrs rabies shot free)..but the chances of my breeding dogs getting rabies was zero...they are not around any wildlife or strange dogs..(can not get it from squirrels) With pets it is a good idea since they go lots of places and might nip someone..if they do then you have a tag and they will not confiscate them until proven rabies free..since rabies is 100% fatal to humans, AC is quite strict if a dog bites someone. I have given my girls here in Florida rabies, but there is still no chance of them getting it... |
