| Caring for a docked tail? The puppy's tail was docked this last Saturday. The vet said we really didn't have to do much in order to care for it. My problem is (some of you are familiar) the mommy isn't licking her so she can go potty. I am doing that with a cotton ball...but the puppy's tail seems sore...and it looks like she is pooping by herself because she does have some stuck on the tail itself. I don't want it to get infected but it is really stuck on there... I don't want to hurt her either. Any suggestions? She is a week old as of yesterday. Also one more question when are they able to go potty without stimulation. Because it seems she is doing it on her own occasionally. Thanks in advance!

| Any ideas??? I tried to do a search but all I came up with is when to have the tail docked and if you should. I didn't see any threads about care of the tail.

| I wouldn't touch the end of the tail. JUst let it heal by itself. As for the dried feces, then just take some veg. oil and rub on that area and it will come right off. |

| Okay I need some support from the experienced Breeders. My husband thinks I'm nuts but I am an over protective mom - what can I say? I did take Scout to the vet and her tail was infected as I thought. They gave me something to clean it with and some meds to fight the infection. I am having the hardest time cleaning her poop because it sticks right to the end of her poor sore tail. This morning when I woke up her tail was stuck to her bottom. I called the vet and they told me to hold the tail with a warm wash cloth until it softened. I did that and finally got to clean her bottom. But her tail is RAW! It doesn't seem to me the stitches are holding anything together. I see a little white dot in the middle of all the raw skin... is that normal???? It seems so sore... the vet probably thinks I have lost my mind... but I just want to be doing everything possible. I don't even know what a docked tail is supposed to look like. Thanks for your help = )

| I know looking at it is really scary, but it's okay. I've had tails licked open before. The vet said as soon as mom licks them open, it's waiting for the infection. Your vet probably gave you betadine. If not you can get some and dilute it. Paint and it 6 times a day, with a cotton ball or Q-tip (you can even squeeze some over it) it's an antibacterial. The hard part for me was keeping mom from accidently hitting the healing area when she was pooping them. When it's open they automatically want to lick it, but it needs to heal. So I would put them to nurse and I would poop them. |

| I have never had this happen, but could they wrap it or something to keep it clean? OR do they want it open to the air??

| Mom isn't licking her at all...so I don't have to worry about mom messing with it. But, Scout is crawling all over and dragging her tail. It must be why it opened. I have been peeing and pooping her myself with a cotton ball. It does look like it is getting a little better... But I have been thinking of wrapping it tonight so that we don't get ourselves in the same boat with hard dry poop all over it. So many questions?????
