| How long should a puppy nurse My little one day old pup is nursing about every 2 hours...sometimes a smidge earlier... but how long should they be on there. She can go anywhere from 15 minutes to 30 minutes...and I have had to pull her off. Is she just using it for comfort at that point. I nursed my little ones and I know at the beginning they would just fall asleep still sucking. The reason I ask is I can't leave pup alone with momma...but I want to make sure she is getting all she needs. She is the only pup. Thank you = )

| Why can't you leave the pup/mom alone? At that age, they should nurse whenever they want, for as long as they want. Keep a close eye on her weight. If she does not gain every day, she's not getting enough from the mom and you may have to supplement. |

| The mom hasn't been accepting the pup. She trys to cover it with a blanket or puppy pad. She will nurse if I sit with her. I know that she is gettting a lot because of her pee and poop. I am putting them together as often as I can...but I have to be there I do not trust what mom might do. It is her first liter and I think she is tramatized by the loss of the other pup. Thank you I will let her nurse until she lets go or I can tell she feel asleep. Mom is on puppy food and she has been licking small amounts of Nutrical off of the puppy. That is the only way I can get her to lick or even sniff the puppy. She also has plenty of water breaks. I am watching them both 24/7. You can read the entire story on the Please Help = ( Thread.

| We did purchase supplement and I am weighing her on a postage scale to make sure she is gaining = ) We have only used the bottle once...last night and that was for my piece of mind so I knew she was getting enough.

| You are doing a good job but never, ever pull the puppy off. Let it nurse till it's little belly is full and it falls asleep on the teat. I understand you are having to watch mama but the puppy should not be moved separate from her. I believe I read earlier where you are separating them and only putting baby in to nurse. Just watch mom closely. she will never bond with the baby if you keep them separated. BTW, mom's milk "let's down' every two hours is what I have learned here. i really do understand your problem with mom but the less you interfere, the better it will be. |

| Sorry, forgot you were working with the mom. If it were me, I would keep her with the mom as much as possible and seperate only few time when I needed the rest. |

| I have kept them together to nap too. I lay down in front of the bed/box and keep my hand petting the mom. That really seems to calm her down. I am just terrified that she might do something because of her behavior to rid of the puppy. I take mom out for about 15-25 minutes about every 2-3 hours. Is that too much. I am trying so hard. I just want to keep mom and baby safe. The vet told me my #1 priority was food and warmth. I have been focusing on those = )

| you are doing okay. I probably wouldn't know what to do either in your shoes. Your vet seems very helpful. |

| That doesn't sound like too much. Be sure she has a heating pad, turned on low underneath the box especially when mom isn't there (of course you're doing that already silly me) I know you're so tired, you're doing really well and eventually you'll get to rest. It won't be long til her instincts kick in (we pray for your sake) |
