How do I ask breeders for a small female Yorkie? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

I really want a little girl. I think you all know I want one around 4 pounds full grown. My question is this...how do I go about asking a breeder about size without sounding like I'm looking for a...pardon my terminology here...teacup? I don't want a tiny, unhealthy Yorkie...my boys are small but healthy and I just want a little girl to match their size. I also don't want to pay out the nose for one...I didn't pay a ton for my boys and I won't for a female either. Any suggestions?

Why not say.."I would like to buy a small female?"
I am never offended when someone states the size pup they want..if I have one who will be a 6 pounder and they want a small one, then I know my pup will not work for them...

Thanks Pat...I guess I just get frustrated with the attitude of some breeders when I specifically ask for a small female. I try to sound educated but usually their tune really changes when they realize that I know what I'm talking about and they can't truly answer my questions. Maybe I should give up and let my little female come to me.

of course you do realize that no breeder can or will guarantee the size of a pup. i have a litter now that i think will range anywhere between three and five pounds because their mom is five lbs, very small framed and dainty and dad is four lbs and very fragile. BUT, mom has a history of throwing small pups. But, who really knows. Thats all you can go buy unless a breeder is willing to keep it till it's full grown and no one is going to do that. Good luck on your search. I know a lot of people really like the smaller ones. I do too but would never purposely breed for tinies.

Yes, I do realize size can't be guaranteed and I'm not looking for a purposely bred tiny. I know breeders sometimes have females that they hold back to wait for them to mature in size and some don't. I would be interested in one from that scenario or one that is a young adult that someone needs to rehome. I would never condone or encourage the breeding of tinies by searching out that type of breeder.

I do understand.. If you are looking at a litter of puppies, I guess the only "needed" question is age""..think about it? If you know what to look for as to "age appropiate size," then you pretty much know where you stand.
I have bought many puppies..I tell the breeder I want a female or male of a certain size..not to the ounce, but within reason..you look at the pup, litter, parents, age and you will know yourself...

Sometimes people do have some that are too small to show or breed. The girl that bought Silk's puppy sold one that was just too small. i see them for sale on here sometimes so just keep your eyes open. i didn't mean to offend you or anything. Just pointing out that we cannot guarantee size. i know i bought my little male because I was told he was going to be about three and a half or four pounds grown. i was so mad at the breeder because I went by the growth charts that are posted on here at eight and twelve weeks. At twelve weeks, it showed him off the chart in size. Then he really had a growth spurt at six months and I got even madder. then at seven months he settled in to where he is now. he is right at four pounds give or take a couple of ounces. (depending on whose in heat that day) LOL. So, the breeder was right in her guesstimate in the long run. I hope I have learned a lot since I bought him. he was my first. I have five and a gang of pups now.

I understand why you'd feel the need to word that delicately. And I'll admit, when someone tells me, "I want a LITTLE one..." I am automatically more wary of their intentions. I think that there is nothing wrong with wanting a smaller one, it's when you get the "I want a smaller one so I can put it in my purse and take it everywhere like the people on TV" motives that really send the red flags.

I think that if you told a breeder exactly what you told us here, that would be a very repected and understood request.

I think a smart pet shopper needs to use the term "little one" tiny..whatever...so many breeders have Yorkies the size of small ponies and it is so unfair to the buyer. I have no problem telling the breeder what I expect for the money I spend..they are free to sell to me or pass...

Thank you for your replies. I'll make my request very specific when asking about a female again. I think what I'm running into is either breeders that are so sensitive about the little ones that they think everyone has bad intentions for wanting one...which I don't...or they breed the tinies to get tinies and they push them pretty hard with a hefty price. Where are the honest, in between breeders?? I just want a healthy, pretty little female that I don't have to mortgage the house to buy!
