Post C section rejection, help My Polly had four babies this morning after a c section; we lost one little girl. Now she is totally disinterested in the babies, when she was groggy I got them on the teat for a while but since then she has laid away from them never has curled around them as she should have and I have begun supplement feeding and stimulation. Any suggestions or tips you could share? Any help greatly appreciated. The babies are 4.5 and 5.5 ounces. thanks

| Congrats on the new kids at least their a healthy weight... I not had this problem but Ive been told you can put a tad bit of butter on the puppy's back and belly, this should entice her to lick it off, her licking should stimulate the pup and perhaps help her bond. Do this one at a time and keep a close eye on mom... wish I could be of more help

Do you have mommy and babies in a confined comfortable area? If you do not I would suggest it.

babies and a not so happy mom Yes, they are secluded from everyone else (2 other yorkies) and the rest of the house. I have them in my pc room...have a sofa to sleep on so I can be near but the new family has a (child's) plastic fence around them; they are in a big plastic container with a heating pad on one end; there is room for Mom to get out and use potty pads and eat... She hasnt eaten yet, nausea is getting less now so maybe she will soon. She has drank water a couple of time... I am going to try the butter trick...actually thought about doing something like this but couldnt think of what...almost wished I had brought home a placenta. They are eight hours old now, not crying and sleeping in a huddle but I am concerned about getting enough nutrition in them....when can nutrical be introduced? I have plenty and the supplement I am giving them has colostrum. thank you for the suggestion!!

Ive never given a newborn nutrical and would hesitate introducing it to the fragile systems until theyre 24-48 hours old...if needed I recommend nutridrops and only a minor drop once or twice a day, or glucose solution. Remember never to feed a chilled newborn puppy, make sure theyre warm without drafts at all time.

Maybe try taking off the heating pad. Let mother do the work. One rule of thumb that is pretty accurate "A content puppy is a happy puppy" If they are not crying. Let nature take its course. Give mom the chance to do the work.

When Venus had a C section , she didn't want to eat for 18 hours . If she drink it is ok . Sometimes after a C-section they want to sleep more than any other things . If the puppies don't cry , it means they don't need supplement feeding .

I always do recommend C-sections to save a placenta to wipe the babies down with. Don't know if butter would be the same since I think it is more identifying her own smell that let's her know they are hers, but just the stimulation of licking might be good for the puppies. Don't rush the supplementing - I only would give glucose water for the first 48 hours and encourage nursing from Mom - supervised of course and holding her if necessary. Like someone already mentioned this will activate her hormones and make her more maternal. Be on the look out for any aggression towards the pups and, if you see any, do not leave them unattended at all. Glucose water: 5% glucose solution by mixing one teaspoon white corn syrup with a few grains each of sodium chloride (table salt) and potassium chloride (salt substitute) with four tablespoons boiled water. This resembles a Ringer’s glucose-sale fluid but, of course, cannot be used for subcutaneous or intravenous injection because it is not sterile.

forced nursing Thanks again to everyone! Polly is still throwing up some yellow foamy stuff and wont eat..is drinking that is good but she wants NOTHING to do with the babies. I held her down and let one at a time latch on to the one teat that is a bit bigger...they are strong thank goodness but after they were 6 hours old and not gotten a response out of mom...I had to step in. Before she could walk she would sit on top of them, never once licked them and only glanced in their direction when they cried. I am so afraid she is NOT going to bond. I did get them all to pee and poop..it was so cute...offered it to Mom but she looked away as to say, "Youve got to be kidding"! The little boy is smaller but all three will drink from a tiny bottle. Will force them to suckle again tonight and continue tomorrow but I am skeptical. Most Moms would respond to cries no matter how bad they felt. She is resting a foot away and one is crying now.. she doesnt even acknowledge it. I am so sad for her...she is a very loving dog to everyone and other dogs.. Will give the glucose solution next feeding. THANK YOU so much, I have fed orphaned baby kittens and puppies but never this young. so worried!!

puppies on mom now Put the puppies on Mom again, made sure each one latched on for a while, she is still laying with them but she has barely looked at them, not one lick and she is a LICKER!!! At least she didnt get up and try to get away from them this time. If they can get her milk down maybe the hormones will kick in too. Wish us luck

There is still a chance that she will start acting like a Mom. It's not too late. Feed Mom some boiled chicken to settle her stomach as that is easy to digest and add some cooked white rice if she has soft stools to firm them up. Make sure the pups stay warm and one doesn't wander off and get chilled. Give the glucose water to give them strength and perk them up enough to nurse, but then place them on the Mom every 3 hours minimum.

Colleen didn't need a c-section but rejected the puppies . I took the puppies , rubbed them on her and placed some colostum on the puppies . Colleen sniffed them and accepted them immediately .

What a tough exp. to go through. Sounds like you're doing a great job. Keep those babies warm (I'm sure you are) cause it's sounds like mama ain't. I'd recommend some peanut butter for a rub on the pups. Alot of cleanup, hopefully mom will do it. I wouldn't wet them to clean them up though, for them getting cold. PS the water is going to be crucial for mom to drink. Don't want her getting dehydrated, and it'll aid in milk production. There is always canned dog food to try. But she should like the chicken that was suggested. Keep up the good work.
