| Need help timing breeding! Ok everyone, I have tried this counting days and my male and female tied on Nov.4th (Day 10). Nothing for 2 more days, this morning they couldn't get together fast enough! (Day 13) All day he has been driving us crazy wanting to get with her again. My question is this: Should I let them breed again even though it would mean a 4 or 5 day interval from the first time? Could the first mating have been just an eager male? His behavior has changed so much today as far as wanting to get to her, should I trust his instincts? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

| We let ours go at it as many times, supposidly... they can only get pregnant like a certain # of days during the heat.. so you may want them to do it as much as possible so you dont' miss the days... |

| breeding You had a 10th and 13th day breeding..and that is good timing. Allowing a stud to free breed is not the best idea for either dog or bitch...I breed two to three times depending on the days. Some people believe, the more breedings, the larger the litter..not so, infact it can have the opposite effect. |

| Yeah this is true, but it really depends on you -- are you 100% sure that they bred fully on these days? do you want to take the chance on them not taking.. that is what the breeder told me before I bred. I watched them.. didn't let them run around free... and they did it perfectly! no problems.. But again it is up to you. |

| I'm not sure what you mean by 'bred fully'? I know they were tied, so I assume they got the job done? My concern is that if they breed too much there could be premature puppies?

| You don't have to have a tie to have the breeding take. Breeding too many times does not increase the chances of the breeding taking.

Yes I read that the eggs are only good for 4 days. Probably natures way of assuring no premature ones Last edited by JeanieK; 11-07-2006 at 02:56 PM. | |

| I have always been told to limit the breeding time span to decrease the chance of premature puppies also. I only breed once, rest a day, and then breed one more time and I always have four puppies (a full house for a small female) so I don't think you have to breed many times to produce a good quantity of pups. Have never been in the situation you are in. I don't think anyone can give you a definite answer, this is one that only hindsight is going to let you know. You might be right in the first mating being a pushy male, but if she seemed receptive then you are probably fine not breeding again. I think I would probably breed once more just to be safe. Don't know off hand the exact number of days ovum are viable, but I do know that all the eggs are not released at the same time so I do believe in the premature theory. I definitely do not believe in the let them do it as many times as they want approach. |

| Attending Dr. Carmen Battaglia's breeding seminar or reading some of his books/articles may help answer many of your questions. You may want to visit his website @ breedingbetterdogs.com

| Trust your Male! From my experience your male will recieve signals from scent...when the time is right...that is when they are VERY excited and will almost anything (climb chain link, eat threw crates, etc) to get to the ripe female. I recently went thru a similar experience...counted the days and put my two together...Casanova didnt give her a second glance, next day same thing...he wasnt proven so I thought something was wrong with him...took her to a proven male who gave her a few licks and snifs then took a nap! with her right there! I brought her home with great disapointment...then to my surprise...the next day my little Casanova lived up to his name! MY MY he became a TIGER and well let me say he tied with her that day...cried for her to get out of her crate the next 24 hours and then tied again, then my daugher let Polly out to go pottie and he ran out the door with her and they tied again. To make a long story short...they tied about 8 times in 4 days. Polly is due Nov 9-14 and is heavy with babies. To answer your question...yes, trust your male, he cant count! but he sure can smell...that's why he is focused (for lack of better term). Good Luck |

| Thanks to everyone who replied to this! I really appreciate all the input. I just thought I would update you. Max chewed up the gate last night trying to get to Katie. He whined forever last night before he would finally go to sleep....so I decided to let them try it one more time today. He did not waste any time. I guess we will find out how right his instincts are in a few weeks. I will let you know if we are making puppies. Thanks again.

| breeding A good male will breed as long as the bitch stands...it is the breeder who decides how many breedings they want for each bitch and you got three good breedings that should result in a nice litter....I have had many one time breedings with pups of very different sizes. Sperm is viable for as long a 7days in some cases...good luck |
