Default Need Help with docking tails & removing dew claws ????

My Jazzi just had 4 puppies yesterday morning at 8:00 A.M. She had 2 girls and 2 boys
that will be ready for 4ever homes at Christmas Time ! Great planning on her part.
I am leaving for Mexico tonight and don't have time to go to the vet B4 I go.
Yes this is bad planning on my part but my trip was planned first! LOL. My best friend who has owned yorkies her entire life will be watching all of them but does not want to deal with dragging them all to the vet. I know how to do both of these procedures having worked for a breeder B4, but have never attempted it on my own. My question, is 30 hrs. much to young to attempt this? I've always heard between 3 & 5 days.
Also with the dew claws, do you just snip it off or are you supposed to leave anything at all ?

between three and five days is thee ideal time. My husband just snipped the entire dew claws off. one grew back and had to be redone. pup didn't mind at all. But the dew claws did bleed and we used the Quick Stop stuff on them to stop the bleeeding. It's best not to overuse this because mom will lick it off anyway. Also the little paws were sore as far as pushing to nurse for about one day. he docked the tail one fourth of an inch below the gold spot on the bottom of the tail and it is just right.

Though your friend may not want to, she is going to have to take them to the vet for you. 30 hours is too early. This is also a good time for the vet to check over the Mamma and make sure all is well. She should not be in the building when they do the tails and dew claws.

I probably have no right to respond, as I am not or would never be in this situation...

BUT, I just read this thread and it has disturbed me beyond belief!

OMG - OMG - OMG

PLEASE either do not go on your trip and take care of your responsibilty yourself, OR PLEASE find someone responsible enough to take these pups to a Vet for the proceedure to be handle by a professional.

This is going to haunt me, PLEASE keep us posted, I really would like to know the outcome. Best of Luck!

To all of you who got a bit upset with my thought of trying this procedure for the first time and then leaving for Mexico. I understand your concerns and
I'm sorry if I upset any of you that was not my intension. I just was trying to be responsible by asking questions and thinking of all my options out loud to all of you. I have been in on the procedure many times at the breeder
I worked for but never did the snipping myself,
rather just held the puppies for her. I know all of her puppies where three days old. I just wasn't sure if it could be done before that. So I turned to fellow breeders at this forum for answers. I would never put my babies in jeopardy and was planning on taking them to the vet as soon as I returned from Mexico next weekend. But because there is such a small window for this procedure to take place I felt I may have no choice but to do it myself .
I found out everything I needed to here at YT and have since scheduled an appointment for this Monday. My friend will be taking them and letting me know how everything is on a daily bases. Thank you for caring and for all of the info.

AWESOME!!!

I hope that I didn't upset you, I was just so concerned and something just didn't sound right. BUT it now sounds like you have everything under control...and that's the most important part!

Have a great time in Mexico and CONGRATS on the babies...

Post some pictures when you get a chance, I can't wait to see the little ones!

I guess I know why I'll never be a breeder - I wouldn't be able to leave puppies OR the mom right after she gave birth....I'd be a wreck.

I hope your friend knows what she's doing and 'dragging' newborns to a vet shouldn't be considered a chore.....I hope she does right by them and the new mom...Good luck to you.

Thanks for your concern, I spoke to her today and everything is fine. I'm happy the day she went to the Vet the weather was mild. You just never know in the Chgo. Area. I think she just felt a bit overwhemed for a moment or two but when I explained that I was leaving to early for the proceedure to be done she gladly stept up to the plate. All is well with the pups, Jazzi, and friend. I hope everyone doesn't think I'm heartless. I had no choice but to go this is a working vacation. I really had everything planned out pretty well except the tail thing. I totally thought I would have time to take them to get it done but she had the puppies a few days off my calculation.
Oh Well all is well now.
Thanks,
Key2Yorkies ~ Jan
