| Should I give my pregnant dog flea medicine? I have a pregnant female and I am unsure if I should give her heartworm and flea medicine. I don't want to hurt her puppies.

| I would not give the flea medicine. Although several companies claim that the flea medicine is safe for pregnant dogs, it has been proven otherwise. There has been several pups born with birth defects and other problems because flea medincine was used. Just keep a eye on her for any fleas and if she has any just bath with dawn dish soap and it will kill all the fleas. I myself would not risk it, it is too risky to me...

| Having recently read a thread on here where the pregnant mom was given flea treatment and all of the puppies were born deformed or died, I say no no no no no no no no no. No. Absolutely not. And it pains me to say that I don't even trust the Vets on this one, since that persons Vet recommended she use the flea medication. I would say try to find any holistic/natural method you can to combat the fleas. Good luck! |

It is safe to do both. I've known several people my mom included that has given her's their medication. My mom started using Revolution. I'm not sure if there is a difference. I would just double check with my vet and see what they say.

I would think a lot hinges on how far along the mother is as to what kind of birth defects they may have. Just do what you think you need to do. Fortunately this time of the year fleas aren't too terribly bad. Again that depends on where you live. Of course JMO. Do what you feel you need to do. How bad are the fleas? If they aren't real bad I would just bathe her good as needed like was said with Dawn. I have had to bathe lab puppies before with dawn when they were just 4 or 5 weeks old they were infested with fleas. Please keep us posted.

| My thread!!!!!!!! i have had a horriblee flea problem this summer and still having it. I also had ticks. my vet suggested K-9 advantage for them all because it is the only one that says it kills ticks also. i asked him about my pregnant bitch. he said it was perfectly fine for her. Against my better judgement and people on here's advice, I put it on her. it was about the time the calender says the puppies are being formed. Silk had two puppies. A huge boy and a girl. The morning she went into labor there were two heartbeats. The big boy stopped her labor. I rushed her to the vet. She had to have a section because if we didn't get the big boy out, Silk and the little girl would have died. he told me that the boy was born dead and his lips weree horribly deformed. the little girl is perfect in every way. i will believe until the day I die that it was the flea medicine. I have a pregnant gal now and still have fleas since it hasn't been cold enough to kill them. I have the long red fleas. the worst kind. I have been bathing kandy in Dawn and combing her with a flea comb . The fleas die from the dawn. i comb dead fleas off her. it will kill them but does not keep them from getting on her. i would not use the flea medicine on her. |

| I wouldnt give it. I too read the flyer and went by vet advice. But 4 of 5 litters having a cleft palate in a 6 month span after never having them before starting revolution was proof enough for me. Didnt happen after ceasing it, and had never happened before. I use it on anyone else not pregnant but would never use chemical flea control again on pregnant bitches no matter what the report says. |

| revolution works through the bloodstream, frontline works through the sebaceous glands so it shouldnt even effect the puppies, but either way do what you please if the fleas arent bad dont worry about it, if they are youll need to control them so the mother or the puppies after they are born dont get anemic from the fleas sucking all their blood...ive seen it happen |

| Thanks for the advice Thanks everyone. I appreciate all of your opinions. I think I am going to wait and just bathe her more frequently. Really appreciate it.

| It *does* go through the blood stream to get to the sebaceous glands "Once applied, Revolution enters the bloodstream through the skin. Concentrations of Revolution in the blood and intestinal tract prevent heartworm disease and treat gastrointestinal parasites, respectively. Revolution selectively redistributes from blood to sebaceous glands, which are found below the skin's surface. Revolution's presence in the sebaceous glands and in the skin is the reservoir of drug that provides protection against fleas, flea eggs, ticks and mites." Sorry, I forgot to record the site, but it was from a vet. |

| I give NO medication to my poregnant females. I bought a female that was bred to a top winning show dog overseas...really expecting a great litter...all 4 of the babies were born dead, with horrific, extensive cleft palates....you track back to the week in embryo where heads and mouths are formed, and you then look at what happened during that time frame....in this case, the female was given heart worm medication! I do not give ANYTHING while my ladies are pregnant....they are very well maintained up until the time they are bred....this carries them over very well for the next two months of pregnancy, and the 12 - 14 weeks post whelp, whelp pups are nursing.... |
