| Broker Needed to Import I hope I have placed this on the right thread. Did you guys know that if you buy a pup/dog from abroad now you have to have a broker on both ends? All dogs - pets, breeders, and show. I just learned this and my baby is arriving on Thursday! I have been calling the airlins, air cargo, and tried to contact customs - but you can't speak to any real person at customs you can only leave a message which they do not return. I knew that to import the breeder there needed a broker, but didn't know I also had to have one. You can do the paperwork yourself but it takes awhile and the airlines, air cargo and the broker said that she might then need to stay in the kennel overnight if I had tried to do it myself and have to drive back in the morning. The airpirt is about 1.5 away form me! And it will cost 200.00 to pay for the broker. I don't mind if it will keep my baby from spending the night in a kennel. Her flight arrives in the afternoon and I just did not want to risk doing the paperwork all by myself at customs and her have to stay overnight keneled since we ran overtime into after 5:00. Has anyone had to do this? It just seems everyone has their hand out to get more money. I know that it is good that customs want to make sure that the dogs are healthy coming in to the US, which is great, but at least be available to answer questions. When I called the airlines on Thursday last week - they said that I should be able to do it myself in an hour (customs) - then today they said that all dogs needed a broker to avoid complications and delays. Well, I have hired a broker and hopefully all things will go okay so I just pick her up at air cargo now. T. |

| It is so good that we have one another her on YT to share information, so I thought I better share what I learned to help inform everyone. I would have been so upset if she had to stay in a kennel overnight. A friend of mine said that her friend did not hire a broker ahead of time and went to pick up her Briewer puppy from Germany she just got flown in yesterday and she almost didn't get to take it home. And it cost her over 200., since she did not make arrangements ahead of time and spent a lot of extra time running around to get things processed. Here is a picture of my new baby I will be getting! She is diffently worth the extra time and money. I am so excited. T. |

| Thanks I Love Lucy! I am on pins and needles right now - hoping all will go through without any problems. It is hard though trusting someone you have never meant and giving them all your important information and paying 200. on top of it - not including what I paid for my baby. Then we have a vet appointment on Friday to add to the cost. But it is worth it. I just never thought I would have to do this - get a broker. If Customs were more available to talk to - I probably could have handled everything myself. But they have to be more careful now since people have been smuggling in drugs and stuff inside dogs. That is too cruel and inhumane (or indogane). I just can't imagine someone doing that. Very sad! So I guess we all end up paying. T. |

| Sorry, I'm not trying to be rude, but why import a dog? (It's a serious question) Why not just get one from the states? Are you getting a dog that's not available here? Thanks!

| No problem - that is a great question. I had looked and looked here in the US, but no one had a pup just like I wanted or with the pedigree I wanted at the time. It all boils down to timing And my husband's family is from this country - so it was like getting a remebrance from his homeland too. I knew exactly what I wanted and when I saw her I knew she was the one. It's like adopting a real child - why do so many go abroad to adpot when we have so many children here waiting for adoptions or in Foster Care (I know because I use to be a Foster Care mom)? I think she was worth all the trouble. I plan to show her and I have a half sister to her too. So I know the breeder very well and the quality of pups she has, as well as her being very reputable. So it was a combination of all those dynamics. Trust and quality were very big considerations! P.S. I am a teacher too! :-) T. |

| OUt of curiousity, Did you say what country you are importing your new baby from? I have considered getting one from Germany one day if I ever go that route..Just kinda randomly inquired on it, but if it is this much of a hassle and way way expensive than who knows. Thanks for sharing your info. Please fill us in on how the other part goes. Can't wait to see new pics of your baby adjusting to life here with you.

| Thanks so much. No, she is not from Germany, but I have a friend that just bought a two week old (well, placed a deposit - of course she has to wait till it is older to get her) from Germany and it was a lot cheaper than mine. Even if she adds the 200. fee for a broker here - she will still come out ahead at 2,000 for everything including shipping. The puppies/dogs that breader has are very nice - small ears, nice coats, great lines, compact, nice toplines. She did very well. Great guarantees and Germany is very strict about what and who is bred - sire and dam cannot have LP and they are checked. T. |

| Is this something new that is required now? I have imported all my babies and never needed a broker? Kylie was the last one that I imported about 1 month ago. All I had to do was clear customs and we came home! Smiles, Myra |

I was wondering the same thing. I've imported and just had to clear customs. I did have to hire an agent to keep my dog during a 6 hour lay-over, but no broker was ever involved. Since I plan to import again I will need to check into this much more. | |

| Since all this was new to me ~ I hired a broker. They are listed in phone book and the airlines also gave me names and numbers of brokers. It cost me 240. for the cost of the broker, but I then did not have to go to customs since the broker does all the paperwork for you. I have heard now that as long as the cost of your pet is under 2,000 you probably don't need a broker. But then I also heard of one person that it cost her 500. since she did not hire a broker and ended up having to just to get her dog through customs. It is just the luck of the draw. T. |
