Need info on temp drop before whelping! Autumn is due on the 9th, but we know that Yorkies don't usually go the whole 63 days. I am expecting her to go into labor on the 6th. I do not usually check their temps, I just watch them closer as their time is nearing. I took Autumn's temp because she has a vet appt tomorrow and she is acting like she might go into labor. Her temp is 99.7. So my question is: When the temp drops from 101 to 98, how quick does it do so? Does it take a few days or does it do it in a matter of hours? As the time to deliver approches, does their temp fluxuate? I don't want to take her to the vet if she is starting labor, I don't want to cause her any extra stress. Any info or any of your experiences would be helpful. Thanks in advance, Sylvia

From my expereince they usually will have pups with in 12-24 hrs of their temp dropping. Someone else may be able to give you more advise though. Good luck!

Do you think her temp is dropping in preparation of birth or just a fluxuation? Sylvia

During the final week, I would take her temp 4 times a day and when we got close to the whelping date, 5-6 times a day.

Thanks, Kimberly. Let me get this straight, her temp dropped and then went back up before she had the puppies? It didn't drop again within the 24 hrs just before delivery? Is that the way the temp works? Cause all the paperwork/books say it drops at 12-24hrs before delivery. It says nothing about it going back up. Come to think of it, it makes sense that it would come back up, wouldn't it be dangerous for mother and babies if it stayed 98 until after the birth? Sylvia

You're right, the books don't say anything about going back up that's why I say it could be different with different dogs.

My sperience has been that the temp will drop rather suddenly and within 12-24 hours labor can start but the temp goes back up. You might think something else is wrong but that is nature's way of providing warmth in the environment and for the milk. The puppys need to be kept as close to 100 degrees as possible. So, have a stack of warm washcloths and clamps or dental floss for the cord. Maybe you have already asked all about the whelping kit. Sorry. Warm dry babies are more likely to survive..
