| New To Breeding I have very cute male yorkie. He is only 16 weeks and 2.5 pds and I was thinking of finding someone who would like me to breed him. I have never done this before but he is pure bred and so cute. What do I need to know and how old should he be etec. |

Asking your question here is a great way to start. Some of these threads may apply, and some are just great info. I would hope if your boy has any issues at all, you would consider having him neutered. Good luck with your decision!

| before you consider breeding, you really need to have your puppy tested for any possible genetic and health defect. you should also get documentation regarding his pedigree. considering he's from a pet store, i'd be skeptical about whether he's a good canidate for breeding. |

I am not a breeder, but I would think you want to do as much research as possible on his pedigree. Until you have all that, I highly doubt that any reputable breeder will want to breed just any male with their female just because he is cute. You need facts about him....you will want him tested for LP, LS etc, etc, etc. And he is only 4 monthes old, you do not know how big he will be. Any reputable breeder will want their male to be within the standard. By producing puppies that are not to the standard, you will be contributing to the problem of people complaining that their yorkie is too big or sick or whatever. Didnt' you just buy a yorkie that was not to the standard, and if I recall right, you were pretty upset about that. And now you want to breed your newer yorkie that you bought from a petstore, and run the risk of that happening to someone else. I don't get it.

| I dont think that just bc he is cute doesnt mean that you should breed him! If that was the case every puppy would be bred bc IMO every puppy is cute! I hope I dont offend you I just think that you should do some research!

| i just wanted to add, and this just my opinion, "purebred", "cute", and "small" can't be the determining factors for breeding. health, genetics, and temperament are pretty important too. breeding is a responsibility, whether you own the male or the female involved. before you even consider breeding, i think you should learn all you can about the breed too. i know being a new and enthusiastic puppy owner, it's common to have the impulse to have more little ones like your cute little one by breeding him or her. but being more educated about dogs in general will definitely lend more perspective on the subject of breeding and help you understand whether or not this is a good thing for you or your puppy. i'm curious to know, what's your reasoning for wanting to breed? did you want a puppy from the breeding? monetary compensation? for free and for fun? being so new at puppy ownership and still learning about the basics of training and health, are you really in a position to make an educated decision that would affect the long term health and behavior of an unneutered male dog, especially given there are 2 other male dogs at home? i think there are a lot of things to consider and learn before you even start looking for a female to breed with your male. |

| Sounds like alot of work. I am not talking about the pup from the pet store. The one I bought from the breeder. They are both very cute but the little guy is what I was thinking about. I wanted a small yorkie when I first started looking and it took a while to find what I wanted. I have 3 one 7.5, 2.5 and 6 pds I love them all. I like little ,but wow what a worry.Bigger ones dont worry me as much like a hawk almost got the little one once things like that. ince it was hard for me to find this little guy thought it would be nice to breed him but maybe to much work and not knowing what I am doing. I am not thinking about this for another pup or making money. I thought it would be nice to get a new guy and someone that really loves yorkie that cant afford that much money get one. I am truly blessed to be able to have 3 yorkies. I would like to pass the blessing. |

| yes...please listen to these people b/c there have been so many people who get a yorkie thinking it is the standard when it is not and is very upsetting. i am one of them and there are many post here on yt where people have spent lots of money and have been disappointed. we still love our yorkies but would like to have the standard and in good health. so please listen to these experts regarding breeding. i think people are over breeding the yorkie to make money and we are loosing the standard in which made the yorkie #3 of pets to have.
