How many times should you bring a male and female together when breeding I found 2 suitable male yorkies to breed with my female. The owners of the male yorkie I prefer say that it is only necessary to bring my female over once when she is in heat. The owner of the other male yorkie tell me they prefer that the female comes three times (every two days when she is in heat) and that this results in a larger litter. The owners of the male yorkie that want to see my female 3 times are actually charging less than the other breeder. My vet suggested the "more times the better". Any advice?

Donating YT 14K Club Member | I'd say 3-4 times. No one can say for sure if all the eggs are dropped at the same time or over a period of a few days. While a one time breeding can result in pups, I FEEL your chances are better with repeat breedings. Why not have the same stud breed both females? Also, one thing you can do is have your vet do a vaginal swab to determine if she is indeed ovulating. This will be best for breeding. The "rule" is best breeding to occur on days 9, 11 & 13. My Gracie's first litter, she didn't even want to take till the 17 day and her second litter, she was ready on day 8. I took her twice during her first litter to be swab tested thinking there was something wrong with her. Each bitch is different.

Thanks for your reply and helpful information. Sorry - I wasn't very clear - yes, I am planning on using only one stud, but the owners of the stud I would prefer to use are saying they only want my female over once, so I will have to discuss this with them again.

I think the answer here will be one that will differ from breeder to breeder. Myself, I practice breeding 2 days, once in the AM, once in the PM. I will also add that we had fertility test done on her during her 1st and 2nd heat to determine when she was most fertile. Just remember, your goal should be for the healthiest litter possible, which often times is not the largest litter possible. I am a firm advocate of health over quanity.

Just wanted to add that txshopper has made an excellent point. Just like w/ humans, the ovulation and fertility period differs from female to female...this dog's most fertile period may last 5 days, this one may only last 2. I would also reccommend a fertility test by your vet.

My last 2 litters of Biewers were conceived like this. Chrystel was mated with da Cruiseman on a Tues and Wed..12 & 13 days. I rested him a day and bred him ONCE to Ilsa on Friday. I had the same number of puppies in each case. I do NOT like to get only one tie but that was all my male was gonna do. Guess he knew what he was doing. I prefer 2-3 ties between 11-15 days. The OOPS! breeding between Chrystel and Remi was on the 17th day of her cycle and I am POSITIVE of that. I swear, they just love to make us scientific minded people nuts. They are gonna do what they wanna do, no matter what our plans. Anyhow, I would try for at least 2 ties from either of your choice...
