| Information on Buying a Puppy in California Hi Everyone, I am a small breeder in Ventura County, some of you know me. Here is some advise that will help new prospective owners in purchasing a healthy puppy or dog. Be careful, there are alot of puppy mill puppies here in California from Mexico. They are sick and 98% have died within weeks after purchase. Here are a few check lists before you purchase here in southern California. 1.) Make sure the breeder you choose has the Dam and preferably the Sire, I do. My dogs also are registered, I show prospective owners there registration with the puppies registration. 2.) If you want a pure bred, make sure you get the papers before you leave with the dog. Never let anyone tell you they don't have them now, they will mail them to you. That will never happen. 3.) Request Vet receipts or proof of Puppies 1st Exam & Shot schedule. This way you know by the receipt that the puppy has been seen by a Vet and has started their puppy shots. Shots should start at 6 - 8 weeks. Here in California the law states puppies can not be sold under 8 weeks of age. I always give copies of the Vet receipts plus a Vacination Schedule that has been filled out by my Vet. Proof of Vet Care. Any questions PM me or reply here, I'll try to do my best to help guide you in getting a healthy puppy. Since September of 2005 I have witnessed and talked to alot of upset new owners who have been ripped off or purchased a sick puppy. I feel so bad that I have started giving this advise as I have sold my puppies. As you can see I do my best to prove the care of my puppies. Yes my Vet bills are expensive but All my Dogs & puppies are very Healthy and that to me is important. Good luck again Gracy

| #2. will be a problem here. I do not release AKC papers for limited registration until I recieve a vet certification for spay/neuter on any pup sold. I recommend this be done at 6 months, so you will not get those 'papers' from me until then. I will gladly show pedigrees on all my dogs and you can see the application for your pup's registration, but you will not get it with your puppy. In addition I will also add a #4 Get a contract with your pup that guarantees the terms of your agreement with the breeder, including a health guarantee. Mine includes: 10 day return policy with full refund, in case your other pets don't adjust, or it's not what you thought it would be like or whatever reason, fine, no problem, bring the pup back (uninjured, of course)... 1 year health guarantee against congenital problems with $ refunded up to the purchase price of the pup to cover any related vet expenses. I don't believe in replacement puppies, though it is an option. As a puppy buyer, I would not be willing to replace a family member if they had a problem after 6 or 8 months...so a replacement pup would not be a guarantee of anything as far as I was concerned. The exclusion to this is luxating patella, although it can be congenital, it can also be caused environmentally by jumps/drops/falls so cannot be covered. Your breeder should be familiar with the defects that are common to the breed and discuss them. Lifetime return policy...I insist that any pup be returned to me at any point in it's life that the original owners can no longer care for it. I am not going to contribute to the rescue problem, any dogs I have produced are ultimately my responsibility while they live. A breeder that asks you lots of questions about your home/lifestyle and answers willingly any questions you ask is a must.

| All Breeders have their own check list, so should buyers. No matter how, a good breeder will have most questions and paper work for the buyer. Also proof of Pedigree. Everyone whom responds in this thread, will give any new puppy owner great advise.

| Hi Villette, Nice hearing from you. My friend is having a terrible time placing her AKC pups because of this. Everyone who answers her ad trys to talk her into lowering her prices. She is only ask 800. for her males and 1000 for the females. Here in CA that is very low. Those puppy mill sellers prices are 200 - 400 some are in the thousands and the pups are extremely under weight. That is also the problem. Plus the Vet Bills some of these people end up paying. People buy pups here in So Cal by the weight of the puppy. The smaller the dollars go up and without papers or proof of Vet check and care. I am glad I can write this too. You are right, all the TV stations and papers have been warning buyers since Nov. Everyone out there be careful!! Gracy

You're helping people in CA just by posting this so thank you for this. It's so sad what's happening.....The old days are gone ....dogs are now such commodity that anyone out for an easy buck is selling puppies it seems.... and what's even sadder is they don't give on d**n about whether the puppies live or die.... These mill smugglers are really REALLY evil...maybe even more than the established mills... if that's possible. they WILL pay for this ...what goes around comes around and I hope all those sick coldhearted people that deal in brokering and Mills get theirs one day. | |
