OFA Tests For Yorkies? Hello, I'm thinking about getting into breeding Yorkies. If I get some breeding stock should I have them OFA certified? If I do, what tests do they need? I know they are prone to the luxating patellas, is there anything else they should be tested for? Thanks, Whitney

tests You can breed two Yorkies with excellent knees and get pups with bad ones, it is a recessive gene. I find it interesting when a breeder says their dogs have been tested for genetic diseases. The vets at Cornell say they have no routine genetic tests breeders can do. Each Yorkie in a breeding program can have a 100% clean bill of health, but produce pups with genetic diseases. That is why healthy parents can produce liver shunt pups. You need to buy from an honest breeder who knows the bloodline..it is more then two parents, it is an entire pedigree of dogs.

book Jerry, you flatter me! LOL It may seem like I have alot of Yorkie knowledge, I do know a little about most things concerning Yorkies...but put me in a room with real "Yorkie Know It ALL's" and I am blown away. They talk genetic's like they invented it. I know breeders who can look at two dogs and the pedigree and tell you what the pups will look like..and they are right! Maybe I could come up with a short phamplet for the novice...LOL
