| Heart Murmur Hello everybody. I have never had a pup with a heart murmur. And I just raised a litter and they are 11 weeks old .... One girl went to a loving family who had a deposit from birth..... been waiting for her for months.... comes to my house for playdates.... just a great family. My pups all get first shots at 7 weeks and then another at 10 weeks and all were checked out by my vet who said 'no heart murmur'. So they just came back from their vet and said their vet said she had a heart murmur????? But their vet said it's nothing to worry about.... and she might grow out of it. So when she e-mailed me.... she didn't seem too concern cause the vet told her it was a little one!!!! WHat? Isn't a heart murmur a hole in the heart? It's a serious thing, isn't it???? Could my vet have missed it TWICE? Or do you think her vet might have made a mistake. I told her to keep me updated and I didn't want to panick her cause she was so carefree about it but I'm soooo worried now. Is it or isn't it? My first yorkie I ever had was a LS baby and I know it was the worst 2 years of my life cause I was soooo attached to her. I don't want anybody else to go through what I went through. Are murmurs passed on by the parents? Is there procedures to cure it? I might be working myself into nothing but I wanna know from other breeders out there that have dealt with heart murmur. |

| I'm not a breeder so I can't help with the parents but as far as the puppy, that is exactly what happened with my Gus. The breeder's vet did not pick up any murmur but when I brought him to mine they found a grade 1 murmur. They told me not to worry, that it could be from stress or that it could disappear on its own - it is known as an innocent murmur that puppies and children grow out of. We went back two weeks later and he was fine. I have my vets listen carefully every visit and they all say he has a strong, healthy heart. Since her vet seems as unconcerned as mine was, it may very well be nothing to worry about.

| I don't know if they are genetic, sorry. Yes, they grow out of it, the murmur disappears. I don't want to give you the impression that I know a lot about the subject but I have read innocent murmurs are not uncommon in growing puppies. Gus is 18 months old.

| An 'innocent' heart murmur is called a Venous Hum. My oldest son was born with one and I was told he would outgrow it. He did. It is not heart disease. I had bought two puppies that arrived with heart murmurs, grade 2. That was heart disease and it was heard and graded just with a regular vet exam when they arrived from Oregon. It was followed up with echocardiograms. I kept them anyway. One lived to 9 years and the other 61/2 yrs. They were dearly loved and I never regretted keeping them and not returning them to their breeder. It was so obvious that she knew they had heart murmurs after I informed her they failed their vet exam. I worried what would happen to them if I sent them back to her. Jessica |
