| Question I was thinking about breeding my male yorkie and one of my friends said that she knew a lady that studded her male once, but she got his stuff(sperm) sent through the mail. I've never heard of this before, so I was wondering if anyone else had????

| You can do a search for "canine artificial insemination fresh chilled" and there's a ton of information. It's collected by the stud dog's vet, packed in ice and shipped Fed Ex like a transplant organ to the bitch's vet. It's done a lot. It's not cheap. "Reproduction in dogs can be either planned as part of a breeding program or accidental. Either way, most breeding is successful and results in the birth of healthy puppies. For some dogs, natural breeding is unsuccessful and artificial methods are required. Artificial insemination (AI) is the process of collecting semen and depositing it through artificial means into the vagina of the receptive bitch. AI is reserved for valuable purebred dogs that are unable to conceive through natural means due to various problems. In the bitch, abnormal vulvar or vaginal conformation, such as narrowing, may preclude coitus. Bitches may also be aggressive toward the intended sire and not allow breeding, for whatever reason. In the male, poor sex drive, weakness or pain when mounting due to arthritis or prostatic disease or aggression toward the female may result in the need for AI. Another common reason for artificial insemination in breeding programs is the geographic separation of the dam and sire. Champion stud dogs may have semen frozen and shipped throughout the country, especially if transportation of the female to the male’s territory is not possible." http://www.petplace.com/dogs/canine-...ion/page1.aspx |

| Thank you for your help. I didn't think that it was a very common thing but obviously it is.

| Ai I would always go for a natural breeding when all possible. AI is not as reliable as a natural breeding. Look for a good quality stud from a reputable breeder in your area..best wishes |

| AI is an expensive procedure and not as reliable as natural insemination I have heard. Unless your male is a very well-bred and desirable stud, I would wonder whether or not the whole deal would be worth it. I personally have a great little Biewer stud but I would not consider having his sperm used for AI. The expense can outweigh the good it does and then can be unsuccessful.. |
