Grace is due to go into heat again late March, early April. I have found a stud for her, but the owner of the stud wants me to do the breeding. She has only bred him once before (and the bitch's owner did the breeding at her home), and the bitch had 6 pups, so he is proven.

Since I've always heard that it's best to take the bitch to the stud, I'm a little concerned. But, she has brought him to my home twice now, and he seems very comfortable and made himself right at home. So maybe that part will be ok.

My main question is this. If Grace's cycle is like the last one, I expect her to be ready around day 13. So, when do I get the stud and on what days do I attempt to breed. Do I skip a day in between? Once a day, twice each day, or what? I've heard different opinions on this.

Is this Gracie's first breeding?

I know it's traditional for the bitch to go to the stud, but there are exceptions to every rule.

I would keep him from at least the 9th or 10th day and try a first breeding then.

Yes, this is Gracie's first breeding. So, it will be interesting. I will keep you posted.

I would think if the stud is comfortable at your house then lets hope he does his duty....
I have always been told and found it to be true that day 9 is a good day to start. Let them do it ONCE a day for three days.
Then some say count 57 to 63 days and there should be pups if the breeding went well. Watch for her temp to drop as usually the pups will come within 24 hours of her temp dropping.

my sissy mated on her 13th and 14th day...i let my male decide when the time was right and boy was he right she has a belly full of pups now... due on feb 19th

Oh, yes, I have a mentor. In fact, I'm on call for when her girl goes into labor. I can't wait. I have done a lot of research over the past 2 years (1 year prior to purchasing my girls and for the past year that I've had them). But as you all know, the first time is always scary!

Hi, it might be difficult for (and please take this next part as I mean it. Experience has taught me a lot and my mentor, Yorkie Rose, well, what can I say? She wrote the book!) a novice breeder to manage a virgin female, a novice male in a home that is not the stud's house. Having said that, Cruiser, my Biewer male, had a girlfriend all afternoon a week ago and could not get the job done. I let the bitch's mom take him to her home and approved an AI if needed. That was unsuccessful first time and was planned for a second time. I breed on the 11-13-15 day as a rule but that is not carved in stone. The vet had done a smear and said the female was in "early estrus" but I did an internal and did not agree. Apparently, Cruise-man didn't either. He did the deed on his own-just out of the blue on Wednesday and then again on Friday. So, he had a mind of his own. That female was a virgin but Cruiser has been bred 3 times..
I use lubricant for the male and I HOLD THEM THE INTIRE TIME OF THE TIE! I am not shouting but want to make sure the importance of not allowing the female to drag the male around and harm him..
Also, I have not found that flagging is a good indicator of when the female is ready. My females will flag at the drop of a hat!

I'd also like to add to make sure that the stud has been tested for venereal diseases before you allow him to breed your girl. He has been bred to another bitch and you want to make sure your girl doesn't get infected.

Wow, thank you all for such good advice. My mentor did tell me to hold them during the tie(s) and also about lubricating the male (she does these things as well). So, I think I'm ok with that part. I see what you mean, though, having ME as a novice, my girl as a virgin, and the stud in my home. Doesn't sound like a recipe for a successful breeding. But I feel pretty confident about the process.

I just didn't want to miss THE day, ya know? My girls actually "flag" quite frequently, even when they are not in heat. I do remember, though, during their heat cycles, they were much more sensitive to the touching.
