| Your puppy gruel recipes Hi everyone! I am preparing to start Lil Maddie on her gruel on Monday. She will be 4 weeks old. I can't believe it. It seems like she was just born yesterday. I was just curious about what kind of gruel recipes you breeders chosen to stand by over the years. I just think it would be interesting to learn a few things or two about the reasons you have chosen the recipe you use.

| Hi Heather! I use puppy food, milk replacer (formula) and chicken baby meat. (gerber or beech nut) I soak the hard kibble in warm water for a while, and add it all together and mash, mash, mash! I keep it "soupier" at first and gradually thicken it. I add a bit of hard puppy kibble later on in with the mush and just let it float in with it. Eventually you'll have lil' maddie eating like a queen! Start her out by licking off a spoon or your finger. I've even put some in their mouth or on their mouth if they didn't take to it at first. | I mix together cottage cheese, dry puppy food and canned puppy food. I even give this to my pregnant ones. They all love it and the puppies go nuts over it. |

| How much does everyone feed their pups? Lil Maddie is 5 weeks old now. I have her eating about every 5 hours now. I've been giving her about 2 small teaspoons at a time. I've actually been using 2 baby spoons worth. She just wants to eat so much, but her belly gets so huge and I have to stop her. She still won't take to drinking much water on her own. I give her a little with her bottle in between feedings. Any suggestions?

| Not sure what everyone else does. But I never limit their food, when they are so young I just let them eat as much as they want. Dry out all the time and then canned two to three times a day. Really cant tell you how much canned I use, I just put it out.if they eat it all, I put out more until they stop. They have always stopped eventually......... As they mature, canned is fazed out slowly except for the occasionally treat food. |

I just think her little tummy is going to explode if she eats any more than I give her! She even seems too full and a little uncomfortable with the amount she's eating now. I just heard that it wasn't good to let them get too full. She is really small. I'm not sure of the average sized 5 week old, but she is only .5 lbs. I don't know if that matters either

| Yorkiemom1970, I've started my 4 week old girls on gruel this week. I've been using Esbilac with the dry puppy food. I soak the puppy food with warm water till it's a mush and then had the Esbilac. I've checked at the store for the chicken baby food, but all I've found is the chicken and the beef both with gravy. Is that the right kind? Is the gravy too rich for the puppies?

| I'm just starting the weaning process with my puppies. We are hand feeding 4 babies after our Lucy developed eclampsia. How I figured the amount of baby cereal or whatever combination you choose to start with, I mix up the same amount of food that the pup would get from the bottle. For example, if a puppy would be fed 30 ml. of formula, I offer the same ml. in the form of a cereal / formula or gruel combination. I use my measuring spoons which show the ml. amounts. I keep a chart that shows how much should be fed every 4, 5 or 6 hours depending on the weight of the puppy, but realistically I feed every 4 hours during the day and 5 hours at night. I also started with 1 Tbsp. of Cereal to 5 Tbls. of Goats Milk formula. I'm just starting, introducing cereal, so I also supplement some bottle fed milk after eating because they get half of it all over the place), so I want to be sure they get their full meal requirements for the feeding. I'm also, only offering the cereal mixture during 2 feedings per day to see how they do, before progressing further. I also wanted to mention, my pups got into some trouble with constipation with Esbilac, which required enema's for all of them at the vet. I was sure they were well hydrated, and had been offering boiled & cooled water between feedings which they loved (I warmed it a little before giving it to them, to not chill them). I googled Esbilac and constipation and got a zillion hits regarding that and a ton of other worrisome details re: the formula. I wasn't happy with how the powdered Esbilac mixed either, as I used a wire mesh strainer to be sure all was mixed. There were so many clumps, it was aggravating. While it's a bit on the expensive side, I chose to use whole goats milk, rather than evaporated and make a homemade formula which includes egg yolk, yogurt & karo syrup. The constipation was such an issue, I just switched them to the homemade formula and my pups did a lot better with the poops within 24 hours. That had me soooo worried !! |
