Question Puppy Deposits part 2

Here's another question for you guys. In leu of all of the deposit threads lately, as a breeder, let's say...I took a deposit from you for a pup. As the pup got older, I decided that I didn't want to sell it. If there is no contract signed, is it my right to send you back your deposit and tell you the deal is off?

If a buyer can change their mind about buying the pup, shouldn't I have the right to change my mind about selling it?

absolutley!as long as you return the deposit, i don't see anything wrong with it. it is your right just as you said, and it is our right as buyers to change our minds. ofcourse it hurts if the buyer is excited about getting a pup then they not get the baby. but that is the same for breeders when buyers change their mind. the breeder is excited that the pup is going to their family then the buyer changes their mind it is the same thing. WE ALL HAVE A RIGHT TO CHANGE OUR MINDS!

Yes, it is still your dog unless you signed a contractIMHO. Does this mean you are keeping another one of your babies?

Of course! Its your right as a breeder. If we, as the buyer, have the right to change our minds, you have the right to change yours too!

I didn't read the last post, but I want to put in my 2 cents!!! I think if someone takes a deposit, then that is a unsigned contract between two parties!! I don't think the buyer or owner should be able to say, Oh, I'm sorry I have decided not to buy your pup or sorry I'm not selling him or her (I've changed my mind). We take deposits and place deposits so we know in time we will either have our puppy sold or will be getting our puppy after it is big enough!!!
Kinda like a hand shake!!
Oh and this is my opinion!! I don't want anyone shooting me over this discussion!!

Just wondering, why have a contract/deposit prior to the sell if it actually doesn't guarantee anything?

Some breeders use a contract when receiving the deposit...you paid XXX amount of dollars and XXX amount will be paid in full on XXX date...things like that.

I have only taken one deposit and I never cashed the check... Most people don't like to leave them, and I can understand that.. and then most people also want to go and buy a puppy not wait until the puppy is ready!!
I don't know if the deposit thing actually works!!

It's always worked for me. Last litter, I took deposits on 2 of them and with Woodie this time.

Food for thought...if a YT member paid a deposit and then the breeder changed their mind and the member came here to post about it, how many of us would slam the breeder for breaking the buyer's heart???

I agree with this. I put a deposit on a pup that had some health issues. The pup died and the breeder applied the deposit to a new puppy or she said I could wait for the next litter.

I have taken deposits from those that have not bought from me before and really really sound like they want a baby from me and only me. Before I even accept a deposit, I have numerous conversations on the phone and by email I also get the vet reference. Then and only then I will accept the deposit. I am pretty flexiable with my deposit. I ask for it and stated that it's non-refundable if you decided you just don't want my puppy. I know things can happen that are out of our control. I will give a refund minus the deposit within a reasonable timeframe a week or two.

Oh and Karen..'Bang Bang'..lolololololol
