AKC, Why Would A Good Breeder "NOT" Use AKC's Puppy Finder? AKC has features to look up breeders, why would any responsible breeder NOT use AKC to sell their pups? I haven't looked at costs or hoops that one would need to go through so I'm genuinely asking why. I've routinely read here at YT the last 2 1/2 years about choosing a responsible breeder when selecting a yorkie but I rarely see others point to the AKC feature to choose a breeder from their list. I notice WA state only has three yorkie breeders and one of those is for parti yorkies: Yorkshire Terrier Puppies For Sale In WA - AKC Puppy Finder I'm not looking for another pup but we get a lot of inquiries here at YT for yorkie pups, shouldn't an automatic answer be to direct them to AKC's list? Why don't we? What is wrong with AKC's list? Purely for discussion, I'm just curious what you think about it. Last edited by MarkFromSea; 08-05-2016 at 01:31 PM.

Having bred a few litters from my Champion AKC bitches, I did accidentally post one litter on AKC -- hit the wrong key when I was doing the on-line litter registration. The cost was $29.00 for 90 days, which I felt wasn't unreasonable. Being a very limited breeder, most of my pups are spoken for prior to breeding the bitch, so even when I do have a litter, I generally don't have "extra" pups to sell. But last time I did have one boy, so I gave it a try. I was not pleased at all with the results. The vast majority of inquiries came from 1) folks looking for a tiny "teacup" pup 2) folks looking for a pup with full registration, i.e. breeding rights 3) folks wanting me to list my pups on their "puppy find" websites -- for a fee of course None of the above are candidates for any pup I may produce, and I really don't like being contacted by solicitors. I dis have a lot of teaching opportunities, about what the term "teacup" generally implies and why I NEVER EVER give open registration to those I don't know. The solicitors were another matter all together. They don't take no for an answer - and I hate hanging up on folks, but sometimes I make exceptions.

Ah! That makes total sense! Limited breeder, small numbers, which is what we want to see anyway to ensure good care but it doesn't lend itself well to AKC's advertising tool, "puppy finder".... The advertising at AKC attracts the WRONG people and brokers. So, "puppy finder" seems new.... do they still have the registered breeder section and if so, why or why not would a smaller breeder be on that list? Did that work better than puppy finder?

I used the AKC Marketplace with my first litter born this past July. I had wonderful results. I only had 4 puppies and they are all spoken for and going to wonderful pet families. I also have people on a list for my next litter even though I won't be having any puppies until after the new year. With all the scamming going on at other puppy sights, people are now using AKC Marketplace knowing these litters are registered with AKC and really do exist. I have heard horror stories from people who did get scammed and lost a lot of money. One woman I spoke to was scammed twice. Others went to what they thought were people's homes to find out it was a store with all kinds of puppies. They left in a hurry. I will continue to use AKC Marketplace when I have a litter.
