| Pup lost weight-advice please asap As you may know we had puppies here on friday, well since then the have all been gaining until this morning. I have one pup that has lost 1/4 of an ounce and one that just stayed the same. I called my vet and she said to watch them closely today and weigh again this afternoon - which I was going to do anyway - they have an appointment tomorrow to have their tails and dew claws done -but how worried should I be?????? Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!! |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | You could start supplementing them. It's crucial that they gain weight and any loss or maintaining at this age would have me worried. When I had to supplement mine, they got fat as ticks. They gained at least 1 1/2 ounce everyday. I used a bottle but that didn't work too well so I went to a syringe. BUT, this is JMO and what I would do.

| nursing now I just got all the stuff ready and went to pull her and nurse her and she is nursing away so I will wait until she is off the nipple and weigh her and go from there - I am sure she won't take the feeding if she gets full so should I wait a little while to try to supplement her? Or see if she will take any additional formula? |

| how old are the pups?? how many in the litter?? mom's milk isnt real heavy first couple days, check her teats, the more the puppies nurse the heavier the milk comes in. The weight loss would concern me, suppliment and think about delaying (a couple days) tail docking until you see a weight gain.

| I am having a similar problem and have delayed the tail docking/dew claws. I am supplementing with the bottle and now goat's milk (thanks for the advice, guys!). They are now gaining. Sometimes they can nurse and nurse and not get much so weight after they are finished and then decide about supplementing.
