First Heat WAY Early??? Help! We recently got our new little girl, Tara, around the end of November. Tara was born on Sept 20th, and today she started going into heat. We thought something was up this morning because Bender started acting funny, so we put her panties and his belly band on just to make sure. Well, sure enough shes swollen down there, and Bender isnt 'playing' normally anymore. He seems to be ready to take care of business. We are being really careful to keep them separated because Tara is just TOO young. We dont want to risk anything happening. I was just wondering if this is normal? I have never had a female have her first heat before 6 months before. Is our little Tara just growing up fast or is this something to worry about? Thanks ahead of time! -LeAnn

Well she is just a few days shy of 4 months, but I know that this is her true age, because I picked her out when she was only 3 weeks old and visited her weekly at the breeders until I could take her home. We're just hoping nothing is wrong with her. She has grown like a weed these past couple months, and is already about 5 and 1/2 or 6 lbs, which is about a # to a # and 1/2 more than Bender. I just dont know if I should contact a vet about all this, or treat it as if she s just an early bloomer and not worry.

I have never heard of a female coming in heat that early. But you never know. My Minnie came in early at age 6 months. I would call the vet or take her in , The vet can do a swab and tell you if it is her true heat.

Thanks, I am taking her to the vet tomorrow. I researched a bit last night and it seems that while 4 months is very early, first heat is very dependent on how fast the dog grows to their adult size. As I mentioned Tara has grown REALLY fast. We were surprised because her father was 4 lbs and her mother was 6 1/2 lbs, and shes almost her mothers weight now at 4 months! Maybe shes just matured early because she had her big growth spurt early ::shrugs:: At any rate we re going to get her checked out. -LeAnn
