| Question about my 6 day old pups Hi, My 6 day old puppies...2 are bigger than the other 2. The two smaller ones are growing slower but are gaining 0.1-0.2 ounces per day. I am supplementing with bottled esbilac as they will take it. They are all equally active and all latch on her well. Some of my breeder friends are very concerned and others are not. What do you all think?

| How is the mom acting? If she is settled and the puppies are growing, I wouldn't worry. If mom is kind of frantic, I'd take her and the babies to the vet. Sylvia |

| This is how I determine supplementing my kids. Put all the kids on the scale and weigh them. Add up the total weight of the group. Divide that number by the number of puppies. here is the example 4 oz, 7 oz, 7oz and 6 oz. the total weight for the four is 24 ounces. I divide that by 4 (number of babies which is 6 ounces. Anyone under that 6 ounces is not getting enough to eat and needs help. I have done this for 30 years and works well. I also use goats milk/ |

| She is not frantic. Babies are latching and nursing but the two smaller ones are not gaining as fast as the two smaller ones. Do you mix anything with the goat's milk? I have been using the esbilac, but the pups dont seem to like it much. Thanks for your help!

| Its been my experience to suppliement the larger ones and let the little ones on the teat as much as they want, check on them often and throughout the night put the little ones back on. Many times the larger ones will be bullies and take over the teats pushing the little ones away. Suppliment the larger ones every 3 hours or so. The pups should double their birth weight by 8-9 days old. I weigh 3 times a day morning, noon and night for the first 3 weeks.

You big copy cat. You got all that in before I could. LOL . I went to church this morning and had to cut my last post short. IMHO I will supplement the big ones- mt thoughts are that the little ones need the real stuf. I use the goats milk whole until they get a little older like 4 weeks. The goats milk seems to have a higher surgar content so kids may be on a bit of a sugar high. Like feeding your own candy. But will not hurt them unless you give too much of something else that has a lot of sugar. I weigh mornning - noon and nite to see if I am seeing a increase in weight no matter how slight. kepp a record. Some puppies like to eat more in the afternoon or eveving and I will adjust for them. Good luck | |
