| Breeding with or without papers? Hi, I have a question about having papers when breeding. I have 2 yorkie puppies. They are from 2 different litters. My husband and I have been deciding if we want her to have a litter or not. They are only 4 and 5 months old and we have a lot of time still. Our little girl has no papers and is the cutest thing ever. Our little boy is an adorable teddy bear yorkie and we got the CKC papers with him. If we want, we can pay an extra $700 to get the AKC papers for breeding. He has champion blood lines on both sides. My question is... Is it worth it to get his papers if our little girl does not have papers? We are only going to have 1 maybe 2 litters, depends if family wants the first one. |

| Cute is only skin deep....it is what is in the dogs pedigree that determines if these dogs are breeding potential. I am hopeful the "CKC" you refer to is Canadian Kennel Club....I say that because of the "champion bloodlines on both sides" statement .... I personally would not encourage breeding an unregistered dog....the money and the worry and the risk to your female far out weighs the benefit of breeding for "a litter or two". All breeders ask themself one very important question before breeding a dog...."Is this breeding going to produce a litter of puppies that is worth risking the life of my female for?" Everytime you breed your female, you are indeed risking her health and her life. Breeding unregistered dogs just does not justify the risk, in MY mind. There are sooooooo many Yorkies in rescues that are available.... If this is NOT a dog registered with the Canadian Kennel Club, the "other CKC" is a registery that most puppy mills and BYB'rs use....and of course, you have NO idea what is behind the unregistered dog....you have the potential of producing a smorgasbord of health issues that affect heart, lung, kidneys, eyes and liver, etc.....as the "production manager" of those babies, regardless of how old those babies are, YOU are responsible for any catastrophic health issues and disasters you have bred into those babies, financially, emotionally, and ethically.....you certainly do not want to put a baby that is going to die from a genetic health issue, with an unsuspecting new owner that falls in love with that baby, only to spend enormous amounts of money and time and still lose the baby. I advise you to reconsider this "plan" .....there are way toooooooo many yorkies in shelters and rescues that have been produced from unregistered dogs, BYB'rs, etc.....friends, family, and neighbors can go there and get a puppy/dog and you will not be facing the financial and emotional obligations you are setting yourself up for. | The only reason to breed is to better the breed. As puppy's you can not tell if they are breeding quality. Both dogs should be AKC registered other then the Canadian Kennel Club other registrys are not reputable and will register anything someone says is pure. You also need to know there lines several generations back to make sure there are no genetic illness or issues in the lines. If you breed it is your responsability to make sure that you are bring puppies into this word as healthy as possible. You also need to know it's expensive if you do it right. You will need back up money for emergency csection. You will need to keep and take care of the puppies for 12 weeks and at least get then there first set of shots and there is docking tails and dew claws when they are a couple days old. Mom will need X-rays when she has reached a certain point in her pregnancy. You also have to cut umbilical cords and be prepared for any slight sign that could mean distress. Breeding is risky you could lose your mom and or pups. You must also keep in mind it's painful so you shoukd really only put your female through that if it's for the right reasons. Your female shoukd absolutely not be breed her first heat or if she does not become over 5 pounds. I would save breeding to the pros and get your pups fixed and enjoy them as pets.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | You've gotten a lot of good advice on this thread, and I hope you aren't offended by it. Many of us were like you when we came to Yorkietalk, we saw nothing wrong with breeding our pets, but if you stay around you'll be educated in a big way. It's horrible seeing people have to give up a pet because of an inherited disease and they can't afford to fix the luxating patella's, and other problems. Most inexperienced breeders don't know about health testing and don't really know the line, you should know around 5 lines back, on both sides of each dog in order to breed right. We have an overabundance of Yorkies and the only reason to breed as lovetodream says, "is to improve the breed." One last thing, did the breeder say it would cost 750 to register the dog with the AKC?, I've heard of lots of breeders saying this, so that pet owners won't bother to register, but truth is, it only costs about $15.00 to register a whole litter, but they have to be eligible, and they probably aren't. Many breeders do this because they didn't have breeding rights and or the dog isn't pure breed. When you buy an AKC pup, the breeder can decide whether or not it comes with breeding rights and a good breeder will not sell a pup with breeding rights to an inexperience want to be breeder. One last thing, most genetic problems don't even show up, until 4 years of age, so you have no idea, how healthy your dogs actually are. Here's two great articles in the YT library on breeding. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...-answered.html and http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...t-breeder.html

| I was thinking the exact same thing when I read the $750 part. I don't think the breeder had the rights to breed that dog in the first place.

| Thanks everyone. I went and checked the so called CKC papers they gave me. I thought it was the Canadian but it the Continental? I am a little upset. I thought I did enough homework before I got my babies. Well, my husband and I have decided to fix them both. I love them so much and do not want anything to happen to my princess. Now I hope they do not have health problems as they get older. |
