| Why dock tails??? This isn't meant to be a contraversial post at all Smudger has had his tail docked, and this isn't the done thing In the UK, infact I'm sure it's illegal . When ever I take Smudger anywhere I get the same response.... "Oh look at the poor little things tail" Now I don't like the thought of tails being docked and if I had the choice I would not do it to my pups.... But I do think it looks better. So I was just wondering, why do some people dock their yokies tails?? I must admit it seems strange that over in the UK it's seen as completely unethical, yet it's the norm over in the US. Hope this post doesn't upset anyone

| As Kimberley said earlier on another thread.... "Just do a search and look for the closed threads"! You'll see history, pros and cons.

| I don't know for the life of me why the keep making it a fault in the ring over here, in the US, if your Yorkie has a tail They're born with one, no? I think that it should be a choice, you get a better visual line when they do have the tail as to how straight their backs really are, it's just a continuation of the back bone. It's not like it's for health reasons...

| I think it should be a choice to dock the tails. I myself like he look of a docked tail better than the whole tail.

IMO, a docked tail gives a neater appearance.

| I'm glad you asked, because I recently met the owner & stud I will be using for my gal when she is "of age". He has his full tail. I had never seen a Yorkie WITHOUT the docked tail until I met him. It was actually kinda cute, but odd, since I hadn't seen it before. I do prefer the docked look, but I am still going to use him for my babies "dream date", since I know it has nothing to do with his genetics or conformation or anything like that. |

| I think the US is coming around. We are so slow about some things. I love the tails. My new one has a tail - I call it a happy tail. I think a lot of the problem is all the books on Yorkies, all the videos etc., all have docked tails and people think that's what a YORKIE is supposed to look like. Personaly, it didn't even occur to me until I started reading about Yorkies that they weren't born that way like bob-tail cats. I know - dummy me! But when you think about it - what would a Dobe look like without his ears trimmed? Not like what we think of as Dobe's. I blame it on the show rings.... you? PS - Just tell them he's a yankee dog or something... blame us
