YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Software from Breeding Better Dogs Breeding Better Dogs | Stickdog Above is the link. I am wondering if any of our YT breeders have used this software and if you found it easy to use, and usefull in your breeding decisions? It seems like it would help me sort through the horizontal pedigree. Comments any-one?

| I found it to be excellent, however it does require time to fill in all the dogs! My business computer which is running on XP, has now crashed and being no longer supported, will require purchase of a new, updated computer.....and I suspect all the work I put into filling in the initial names, has been lost. I have numerous Breeding Better Dogs seminars and teaching modules on that computer also....very informative and helpful....hopefully, I have not lost all that info also! I think anything they produce is an excellent source for breeders that are interested in keeping their lines healthy and productive. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Oh thanks Judy, I was so hoping you would respond. May I suggest if you have not already done so, do that back up on your computer. My software guy insists that I do so. I know if you can use it so can I. Now what about when you are dealing with health results from foreign sources, many European and other countries do not have a centralized data base to report the results. Is there some encoding we can do to delineate this? You know a grain of salt....

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I do believe I posted this somewhere before, but I want to relate what I experienced, and from very well known and respected breeders. I was determining what pup to select from a Russian breeder that does do health tests. I investigated over years this breeder. And when my time came I insisted on a genetic test be done on both female puppies. This test for this disorder is an autosomal dominant one, and the chart is very simple. Two clear dogs, should never produce either a carrier of this gene, or one that has two copies of the gene. The litter should be clear. These two dogs were purported to be clear. What I found out, as the breeder did do the genetic testing at my request. Is that one girl puppy was clear, and one girl was affected HU/HU. That should never happen with two clear breeding dogs. In fact the only way you could get an affected dog, is that both dogs were carriers at the least. So here is the value of genetic tests. Much easier for me to pay the incidental costs of a genetic test, then to pay the much much higher cost of importing a dog that carries or is affected by a genetic defect.

| First of all I just want to say BRAVO Gemy Secondly, may I ask what the disorder was? As far as I know there are very few DNA tests for our breed. Do you have any more info about what is currently available? |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Mike you are very correct for the YT breed, there is perhaps a PRA genetic test available, how-ever you would still need to do eye screening for cataracts and other genetic eye disorders. The big three for the YT breed is Liver Shunt and or MVD, Luxating Patella, and there is a toss up for the third one, cataracts, PRA, Leggs Perthes, allergies, and on it goes. There are approximately 21 or more genetic diseases associated with YT, the prevalence rate for many are unknown. And for almost all no genetic test available Hyperuricosuria genetic test is only available to the Black Russian Terrier breed and a few other breeds, none of which are in place for the YT. It is unknown the incidence rate of this genetic disease in YT's, how-ever bladder stones are far from rare in the YT. They in the YT might be secondary to liver issues (most probable), or other systemic disorders. How-ever breeders do not do the genetic test..... This test is available to all breeds, as far as I know. There is for the YT a genetic test for CDA - Color dilution alopecia, or if you will blue born puppies. Also some for coat color. There is a thread on here which explains in great detail CDA, and others for the coat color. My posting was more in line with buyer beware, ask for genetic screening if it is available. Now understand I am a breeder of BRT's, not your average pet owner. Keep alert Mike, hopefully soon for the Yorkie a genetic test will come out for LS or MVD. If it is found, some posters on here who are alert to and concerned with the health of Yorkies, will post the news.
