| 1st Whelper! #Nervous Good morning fellow Yorkie lovers, My 1 yr old Dam is about to give birth to her first litter. Everyday she is showing more and more. She went into heat August 23 2014. I honestly am not sure at the time she convince because my male and female was very busy!! I've been viewing and researching trying to see what/how is the best time to know she went into labor. So is the temperature the best indicator she is going into labor? Another question is that I have 2 yorkies (the Zoey & Major) and a yorkie-poo. Should I keep my pregnant dam away from her friends. They all loveeach other so much, I dont want to add any extra stress.? |

| I am very sad to her your girl was bred at such a young age. Did you intentionally let them breed? Did you witness a tie. Females usually whelp 61 to 63 days from the first tie. The female is usually ready to accept a male after the 9th day of their heat cycle. They remain in heat for 3 weeks. As your female nears her due day she should be separated from the other dogs when you are not there to watch her. Her whelping pen should be setup away from other dogs. How big is the female that is pregnant? Has she been to a vet? About a week before her due day you should feel the puppies moving. As the due date nears the movement of the puppies will be easy to feel and see. A couple of days before delivery the puppies will drop and get into position. Monitoring temperature works sometimes but not always. The best thing is to not leave the mom unattended once she is close to her due day. Do you plan on taking time off when she is near her due date. Is there someone there that can help with the whelping?

| Just mentioning this just so you're aware, a 1 year old dog is equivalent to a 15 year old human teenager. I wish you a successful whelp! It would be best to keep all the other doggies away from the puppies once they're born.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I have waited to respond to you. First as a first time whelper, you should really have help nearby, a breeder whelper coach, and or a Vet who knows about whelping. There are too many things that could and can go wrong with a whelp, to do this as a novice all on your own. For one thing your gal will lose the mucous plug, as a precursor to whelping, and yes the pups will drop into birth position - at least ideally they will. Temperature rises and drops are notoriously inaccurate at least until you know your gal over several matings and whelpings. I hope that you have visited Debra Jensen's website which is pretty good about all things whelping. But no internet learning or for that matter book learning can take the place of an experienced person helping you through a real whelp. Sure hope you can find one.
