| New With Lots of Breeding Questions Hello, First let me say that I LOVE YORKIES!!! Ever since I rescued 2 adult females from a back yard breeder!! They were in such bad shape! Every infection that you could think of they had along with mammary tumors and other things. I nursed them back to health and they were rehomed to a much quieter lifestyle than I could provide with 5 kids.lol Since they left me a year and a half ago, I have so desperately missed having my "shadows" follow me every step I took. haha So now I am purchasing a beautiful parti color female that I am head over heals in love with! I have NEVER bred a dog or any animal for that matter as I have always been on the "rescue" side of the fence. BUT!!! I got to witness a litter of yorkies being born a few months ago and I was just awe struck with the birthing process and of course the pups! I now find myself wanting to look into breeding not hard core but just a time or 2. I KNOW I HAVE A LOT TO LEARN!!! and that's why I'm here. I want to do this right. I do not want poor quality pups. I know some frown on breeding anything but traditionals. I totally understand that. I would never have thought about a parti color yorkie but I just love this female and she has a great pedigree. She will be in second heat this winter sometime. So can anyone recommend a site for breeding info and learning about pregnancy and whelping? I also would love to know about puppy packs that some breeders give with a new puppy. What do you enclose in the packs? Any advice is appreciated and no, I am not 100% on breeding yet just wanting to learn about it at this point. Thanks |

| What you need to learn you can't just learn from the internet or a book. You really need to find a reputable breeder to mentor you and that you can shadow for a few whelps and learn from. You need to learn every last little complication that can happen and how to handle it or you could be putting your female at risk. You also need to have testing done that your regular vet cannot do. It's also VERY important you know the dogs your breeding lines pretty far back to know any illnesses that might run in them. It can be very expensive and breeders are luckily to break even when they do things right. There are also cases where the mom will reject the puppies and then you have to feed them every two hours, clean them, stimulate them to potty everything there mom does. Breeding is a big serious thing to me I feel like it should only be done to better the breed and that the breeder is responsible for bringing these little ones in the world so it's the breeders responsibility to do every single thing they can to make sure they are bringing in healthy pups by doing all the research on the lines and by doing all the expensive and necessary testing.

| Hi, Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I love Yorkies too, and would love a whole house full of them. For starters there is a lot if breeding information in the Yorkie Talk Library, and here are 2 links: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...-answered.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...t-breeder.html Breeding is a pretty involved process if done right, and it is quite costly. You might just find that it is easier and more economical to expand your family by just purchasing pups from a reputable breeder and avoiding all the risks and potential to lose your beloved Parti gal. I personally could never risk losing one of my girls just to produce more pups, but if you do, then find a good mentor and be prepared for some expenses. I wish you well, and in the meantime I hope to hear more about your girl and see photos. I'm sure she will bring you much joy.

| Congratulations on your new girl. Please post pics when you can. I totally understand your excitement, and your desire to breed. I felt the same way after getting my first yorkies years ago. I did lots of research and ultimately decided I just didn't have what it took to learn to do it right. I was also not willing to risk losing my girl. I encourage you to research & learn all you can. I found the research itself was fun & interesting! If you do decide to get involved in breeding, it's really important to find someone with experience to mentor you. There is just no way to learn everything you need to know by reading. Good luck with your new little one, and enjoy your research!
