| Not Nursing new pups I need advise. My girl had her pups this morning, and they are not nursing. She has milk, but they are not opening their mouths, just creeping around. They were born starting at 6 this morning, it is almost 10 now. One has been 'on' for a bit, but the other 3 not yet. Any suggestions?

| Update The pups were a little pre-mature, so their suck/swallow instinct was weak. (Spoke to the vet early this morning, his suggestion was just keep "messing with them, til they get it!") I "milked" the Mom, into a syringe, and fed the pups, all day, and as I was taking the syringe out of their mouths, I slipped them onto a nipple, and milked it. They only held on for a short time, each time, but they are staying weakly on now, they bump off easily, but go back to it! YIPPEE!! p.s. thanks for the bumps!

| It is vital you are weighing those babies at least twice a day, before they nurse....If they are not gaining weight, they are not getting enough nourishment. I strongly suggest you start tube feeding them until they can get caught up....if you start now, before they start declining, you should only have to do this for a week or so.....every 2 hours, around the clock. The formula I use and recommend is here on the forum......Just Born, raw egg yolk, pedialyte, Dr.Miller's Nutra Drops, and yogurt with live cultures....when you use this formula, it delivers 14-16 cal per cc, and you feed 1cc/oz of body weight.....they need the calories to thrive. Especially with preemies, or any baby with a weak gag/suck reflex, it is too easy for them to aspirate if fed with a bottle or syringe....it is much safer and more accurate to tube feed. |

| Update Pups are doing well, and gaining well. I did post that they were catching on. Sorry I didn't get back to the thread to be more specific. I have been weighing, and they are free nursing now, and are quiet for much longer between feedings now. satisfied longer.
