| Stud Dog Pens I have 2 stud dogs. They live in my house and wear belly bands. But I feel that they need time out of their belly bands to "air out". So I am looking for ideas for creating individual pens for them that they can stay in at night or when I am not home where they do not have to wear their bands and can be boys. So the pen needs to be waterproof and easy to clean/disinfect. Any ideas of what I can line these pens with? What do you other breeders do with your boys? Do you leave them in their bands ALL of the time? |

Every dog is different and some hate and will tear up the paper pads. I know someone who uses cloth pads. Then they can hose them down outside to get the excess off and throw it in the sanitize cycle of the washer. For waterproofing (protecting the floor) they use heavy duty contractor/painter plastic and lay that under the pens so the pens lock it down and there aren't any edges to pick at. I personally get a little paranoid about the dogs digging at the plastic and eating it. It works for her dogs, not for mine. Everyone has their 'thing'. Hope this helps and that you're able to find the solution that best fits your needs

| My dog is an x-stud dog and he wears belly bands pretty much all of the time now. I did just buy a baby onesie and I put a pad in there for him to wear at night. It's a lot looser than his belly band so I figure it's more comfortable for him. I thought about putting him in an exercise pen at night with pee pads down, but he sleeps in bed with me and I am sure he'd miss that. I've also thought about taking his belly band off and tethering him to me here and there. If he's tethered to me, he can't sneak off to pee and it gives him a break from his belly band. BTW, if you are using belly bands to keep your pups to from breeding, it's not 100% foolproof. Someone came on here a few months ago with a pregnant dog because of a diaper slip. A friend of mine also had 2 dogs breed through cages...so you have to make sure the female can't get anywhere near your males cage. The only pen I can think of that would have solid sides so if they lift their leg it doesn't go out is a plastic air crate. It would be easy to hose out as well. I put my boys in a big exercise pen and I put pee pads down with towels underneath and around the edges when I am gone. It gives them plenty of room to move around and my floor is protected!! My boys, typically don't chew things up, although one time, Ricky did tear up a pee pad. I think I might have forgotten to put one of his toys in with him though...
