| Urgent questions for experienced breeders PLEASE!! Hello all, I would first like to introduce myself, my name is Jenny and I have been a lifetime yorkie lover and owner! I have always had yorkies in my home for as long as I can remember, and my Grandma used to breed them. I however have never tried breeding them, and have ALWAYS just had them as companions. I have experience in breeding dogs, but only with english springer spaniels which are much larger that yorkies. I have a male and female yorkies, and my female has just had her second heat. I kept them away from each other (just like I did her first heat) with a onsie on my female and a belt on my male (and of course by just keeping an eye on them). Well my daughter got a fever in the middle of the night, and of course I had to run to the store to get her tylenol. I put my female in her cage, and left my husband to watch them for less than 5 minutes, and when I came home they were tied through the cage! My concerns are this, she is so small! My female is 5.5 lbs and my male is 8.6 lbs( both AKC papered with no dogs any larger in their pedigree) , so there is a weigh difference. Is that too much of a difference?? Of course I took her to the vet, at that stage he couldn't say if she was for sure pregnant or not,, he just said to bring her back in about 5 days from her due date for an x ray. Her due date is December 14th and I always thought in this stage with my springer spaniels I could feel pretty well defined lumps in her belly, I can not fell any sepertate lumps in my yorkies belly, she just seems to be getting fat. Her nipples are swollen, but her vulva seems to have gone back down to normal size. Could this possibly be a false pregnancy? Also is it too late to do an emergency spay at this stage? I didn't even think about it until I started reading on here, ANd my vet disn't mention this at all to me at our visit. If she can't handle the birth I don't want to loose her. It would also devastate my kids to loose her right before Christmas! My final question is this, can the vet tell with certainly in the x ray if she will be able to deliver the pups? Has anyone ever had an experience where their vet told them the female would have no problem, and there was a problem? ANy other advice that you can possibly give to me I would appreciate! I tried to ask my Grandma, but she is 89, and all she said when I asked her was "she will be fine honey...it natural!" Thank you all in advance for any advice! I look forward to your help and guidance! |

| With such a large male and a small female living in the same house you gambled and lost, unfortunately. I must say it is pretty remarkable at the lengths animals go to to mate....wow through the cage really? Anyway, I don't know why you didn't spay the female and neuter the male if you weren't planning to mate them? No it is not to late for an emergency spay. Again I wonder why your vet didn't suggest this from the get go since you acted so quickly in getting her to the vet. Here is a recent thread that may interest you, read through and there is some very good info from a Specialist regarding this very topic. Good luck to you and your pups. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...imer-help.html

| Were you planning to breed since you had intact dogs? Or were you going to separate them every time she went into heat? Unspayed females that are allowed to go into heat w/out getting pregnant can get pyometra. There's a 4yo female that sadly lost her life recently from pyometra. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ease-help.html

Second......"can the vet tell with certainly in the x ray if she will be able to deliver the pups?" Depends on a couple of facts. Your vet could have done a ultrasound after 3 weeks following the tie, that would verify that momma is pregnant and how many babies are expected....but your vet has to be proficient in reading ultra sounds. If you have an xray done on day 58, your vet should be able to easily see how many babies are present, and he should be able to clearly measure the pelvic ring to see if each puppy will fit thru the ring. If they will fit thru, that is PART A of that equation. PART B is positioning...and that changes right up until the babies are born....if someone gets transverse across the birth canal, you are skuewed, unless you know how to manually reposition the baby.....and that does not work very often. Also, if puppy legs and head get in odd positions that prevent passage of the puppy, again, you have to either fix it manually or c-section is necessary. | |

| No matter what you decide to do there will be risks. Did they only tie the one time that you know of? How long had she been in heat when they tied? It is possible that if she was bred early or late in her heat cycle that she did not get pregnant. It's a little early to tell for sure if she is pregnant or not but it is possible that she could be having a false pregnancy.

| Thank you all! I appreciate all of your replies and advice! Keep them coming! I can also tolerate constructive criticism, so yell at me if you need to! I am fine with that as well, just help me answer my questions I wanted to let you all know the answers to a couple of questions you have asked me. 1. Did I plan on breeding since I had an intact male and female. The answer to that is yes, I did eventually plan on breeding them. My male is currently a "stud" for a few breeder friends of mine that are experienced breeders. (friends of my grandmas) and i have considered letting my female have a litter, I was just wanting her to mature a little more first. I have asked all of my friends the same questions I am asking you all, but I just want to hear the answers from more than a few people...I am nervous! 2. I do know of all litters going back on their pedigree for the last 6 generations. As I said my Grandma used to breed, and a friend of hers took over, and they keep very precise records. My male has fathered 6 litters so far himself, and none if the females have had any problems or emergencies. The worst case that has happened was one of his litters was 5 pups, and 1 was born still born. 3. The first day of her cycle was September 30, the one and only time they tied was on October 13th. Is that considered late? 4. I called my vet this morning and ask why they didn't offer an emergency spay. I guess my vet doesn't believe in doing them, so I have an appointment with a vat who will do them this Friday. She is going to examine her and we are going to talk about our options. She just seems to have gotten fat so fast, from every thing else I have read it says she shouldn't even really be showing yet, her belly size is what is concerning me. Again thank you for your responses, and please keep them coming! |

| When I was a kid, my neighbor had labs and cockers. She bred her cocker spaniel and she was so excited when it threw a chocolate puppy as chocolates were VERY rare!! She docked their tails and proceeded to sell them....but she held onto the rare chocolate one. Anyways...not too long on down the road, she found out that her puppies were lab mixes. The lab and the cocker had tied through the runs they were in...2 different fences!!! They were never out together so this is the only way it could have happened. Needless to say...we ended up with the chocolate cockador and he was a fabulous companion and a very smart dog. You could have easily mistaken him for a purebred chocolate lab had it not beed for the docked tail!! He was also just a wee bit shorter. |

My main concern is that your girl is on the low end of the acceptable breeding size for yorkies. Just be prepared that your girl might need a c-section. Also it is possible she could go before Dec. 13 so you will need to watch her closely a few of days before then.
